  • All In is not a joke

The comments in the last thread I posted reminded me of this gem.

My friend L was dealing poker, just a straight Texas Hold 'Em game, and she had a handful of people on the table. T was supervising. DP (Douchebag Player) pushes all in on a hand, and promptly loses. He's not happy.

DP: Oh, I was only joking about that "all in" thing, I didn't really mean it! *attempts to take his chips back.
L: Sir? You can't do that. Sir! T!!
T: That's against the rules, all in is all in, you can't have your money back. It's a legally losing bet and belongs to us now.
DP: *stands there turning purple for a moment then pulls back and punches T straight in the jaw*
T: *goes down like a sack of potatoes*

T is not a small guy, nor is he a wimpy guy. He went down and stayed down so that there could be no mistaking that a) he didn't start the fight and b) he didn't retaliate against the punch (because self defense does get dicey sometimes). He stayed down, and let Security deal with it - and deal with it they did. And one of the pit bosses, R? I have NEVER seen him run so fast. He literally vaulted over a table (empty) to pull this guy off T.

The cops were called, DP was taken away in cuffs, L, T and R gave statements, the end.

Moral of the story? If you can't take the consequences, don't play the game.
Now, I'd like to digress from my prepared remarks to discuss how I invented the terlet...

I got to see that shit CONSTANTLY when I lived in Vegas (worked at the old Winchells right off the Strip) and I tell you, the amount of "How DARE they make me spend all of my money!!" whiners that got lost and came my way was hilarious

And then you get the ones who say shit like "Now my kids don't get to eat tomorrow, you just took their lunch money." Like you're supposed to care. I had a guy who literally told me that once, and I said to him, "Now whose fault is that? Mine for winning it? Or yours for betting it?"

Yours, of course. Don't you know that nothing is ever their fault?

What could he say? Like I've said before, they don't pay me to be WRONG.

Didn't stop him from trying against the next hand. "Oh, my wife's going to leave me now, that was the money I was going to use to buy her flowers on the way home."

"Again, sir, no one put a gun to your head and made you sit down and bet that money. You have no one to blame but yourself."

If he was pissed, he didn't show it. He kept playing. For at least another four hours. So I guess he can't have been THAT hard up after all. It was just stupid tactics to make me feel sorry for him and give his money back - which I would never, EVER do. (Unless he won it fair and square, obviously.)

Addicts (yes, there are some true gamblers, but most of the ones that I see are simply addicts trying to get their fix, whether they realize it or not) love to blame everyone but themselves. They bust? "Why'd you let me take that card?" Someone else busts? "Why'd you take the dealer's bust card?" I make a hand? "Why didn't someone take that card/Why do you keep making hands and beating me, I don't understand it/This makes no sense/etc."

They think a sob story is going to somehow make a casino say "Oops, sorry, here's the money you freely bet of your own will back, no harm done!" Not. Gonna. Happen.
                Dealer hits... 21. Table loses.

This happens more often than most people want to believe.

I think Kenny Rogers said it best:

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.

I love to play blackjack but I hate the people that think that whatever you does impacts what happens to their cards. I guess it does in a way but it's still pretty random. I'm not sure if I play conventionally but I do try to play consistently.

I thought it was Amy Winehouse who sang it best with, "they tried to make me go to rehab.. I said 'No! No! N-no!' "

If you do something stupid or risky and take a card that would've made the dealer bust, the other players will be angry with you. While you're playing for you to win, the best way is to make the dealer lose. It becomes a team mentality. However, if you take a card another player could've used, that's different.

29.** Verbal Declarations / Acting in Turn
Verbal declarations in turn are binding.* Players are required to act in turn.* Action out of turn will be binding if the action to that player has not changed.* A check, call or fold is not considered action changing.
This is from the Poker TDA Rules. I know a lot of casinos use it. I'm, somewhat, amazed that someone thought that it wasn't.

I hope the idiot got permabanned.
