I hate when people wait until they get to the resort to do any planning for their stay, especially when that stay included a holiday, and even more so when it is a holiday when tons of people go out for a romantic dinner. Usually people get a little snarky about it when there are no reservations available anywhere in town, I get how that can be frustrating, even if it is their own damn fault, I can deal with that, even though it isn't even my job to try and help them in the first place. What I can't handle is the fact that there are actually a couple of places that I would normally recommend for a nice date night who still have reservations and yet people don't seem to think that is good enough.
For example I had a lovely lady come up to me and very nicely ask if there was anywhere that I could recommend for a valentines dinner and I offered to check online to see what had available reservations, I asked her if it was just going to be two people or if it would be a group (turns out it is two couples so four people) and chatted about what kind of food she likes while open table was loading search results. She likes seafood and score of all scores Berrets, the best seafood restaurant in the area has some openings. I tell her about it and she asks if they have a 7:00 open, they don't but they have 6:30 or a 7:30. Nope not good enough.
Okay so guess she is really picky about the time. Well she happens to be in luck the Seafare, which has excellent food but is a bit more formal, has a 7:00. Nope I already told her that Berrets was the best seafood in town so she doesn't want to settle for the second best, even after I explain that I actually think the Seafare is a better place for a romantic dinner. Alright lady that is as much help as I can give you. It is literally the only place within a 25 mile radius that has a 7:00 reservation available.
Alright I have a few places that I know aren't on open table but that I can check for availability on their own websites. The only one that has a 7:00 is unacceptable because French food is "weird".
Screw this, I have offered this woman multiple reservations, each of which I was surprised to find available (okay I take that back the Seafare is my go to place for making a reservation on a popular dinner out holiday because they don't advertize at all and therefore is largely overlooked by tourists and Williamsburg has a population that skews a bit towards the old side so their earlier reservations tend to go first). I am not a concierge, I'm just trying to be nice but clearly I can't make her happy.
Bonus: that lady called back about two hours after that initial conversation to take the 7:30 reservation at Berrets, yeah that went bye bye, now the closest they have available is 8:45 (which she got rather indignant about and of course didn't take it or pick a different place) sucks to be her.
