  • That's not good enough

I hate when people wait until they get to the resort to do any planning for their stay, especially when that stay included a holiday, and even more so when it is a holiday when tons of people go out for a romantic dinner. Usually people get a little snarky about it when there are no reservations available anywhere in town, I get how that can be frustrating, even if it is their own damn fault, I can deal with that, even though it isn't even my job to try and help them in the first place. What I can't handle is the fact that there are actually a couple of places that I would normally recommend for a nice date night who still have reservations and yet people don't seem to think that is good enough.

For example I had a lovely lady come up to me and very nicely ask if there was anywhere that I could recommend for a valentines dinner and I offered to check online to see what had available reservations, I asked her if it was just going to be two people or if it would be a group (turns out it is two couples so four people) and chatted about what kind of food she likes while open table was loading search results. She likes seafood and score of all scores Berrets, the best seafood restaurant in the area has some openings. I tell her about it and she asks if they have a 7:00 open, they don't but they have 6:30 or a 7:30. Nope not good enough.

Okay so guess she is really picky about the time. Well she happens to be in luck the Seafare, which has excellent food but is a bit more formal, has a 7:00. Nope I already told her that Berrets was the best seafood in town so she doesn't want to settle for the second best, even after I explain that I actually think the Seafare is a better place for a romantic dinner. Alright lady that is as much help as I can give you. It is literally the only place within a 25 mile radius that has a 7:00 reservation available.

Alright I have a few places that I know aren't on open table but that I can check for availability on their own websites. The only one that has a 7:00 is unacceptable because French food is "weird".

Screw this, I have offered this woman multiple reservations, each of which I was surprised to find available (okay I take that back the Seafare is my go to place for making a reservation on a popular dinner out holiday because they don't advertize at all and therefore is largely overlooked by tourists and Williamsburg has a population that skews a bit towards the old side so their earlier reservations tend to go first). I am not a concierge, I'm just trying to be nice but clearly I can't make her happy.

Bonus: that lady called back about two hours after that initial conversation to take the 7:30 reservation at Berrets, yeah that went bye bye, now the closest they have available is 8:45 (which she got rather indignant about and of course didn't take it or pick a different place) sucks to be her.

    Oh, thank you.

I am ashamed to admit it, but there is a really vindictive spirit deep inside me that was hoping that would happen.

I thought some people here might appreciate it, and I'm not going to lie I smiled when I saw the (lack of) availability

I was talking about the Blue Talon and if that is the one you were thinking of then I completely agree the food is totally yummy, I think that is the only french (well french inspired) place here that isn't on Open Table, but if you were thinking of a different place please tell me its name cuz I love french food.

I was thinking of La Yaca - but the Blue Talon is good too. My mom and I's fave is Dudley's.

I haven't tried La Yaca yet (hubby is a really picky eater so I'm waiting for the next time my mom makes a visit) but I have heard great things.

Also I would have been stunned if I was able to find her any reservation there as they were mostly booked up when I made a reservation for some guests on Tuesday.

Very true - that would be very busy for V-Day. I've only had lunch there but it was very nice..and much less than dinner. They have a 3 course lunch which is reasonable.

I just looked at their lunch menu and $16 for three courses is a really reasonable price. I had only looked at their dinner menu before so that is good to know, thanks.

A mere half-hour, either way, isn't good enough? On VALENTINE'S DAY?! How stupid can you get?!

Indeed. You snooze, you lose. Definitely sucks to be her.

her dumb fault for waiting until the last minute, and then be picky about it?? wtf you were nice enough to even recommend a couple of places and she turned her nose up to all of them. she can go pound sand.

There's an obvious parallel between this case and a fable quoted in the Talmud, set during the Roman siege of Jerusalem in the year 70, when there were food shortages: A rich woman sent her servant to the market to buy wheat. He returned and said they were out of wheat, but they still had barley. She sent him back for the barley, he returned and said, now they're out of that as well, but there are still some oats left. She sends him back again, etc. I don't remember all the steps, but in the end she wound up with nothing. The obvious moral of the story is, sometimes you have to settle for second-best...

Stupid enough to miss out, obviously.

And kudos to you Solumina, you went above and beyond. Hope there are people there appreciative enough of it!
