  • Probably unprofessional this time

    There are times when I make every effort to remain polite and professional, and there are times when I relish the opportunity that being self-employed gives me to tell an EW to fuck off.

    Today I checked my various sites, reading comments and PMs and such, and found this:

    "$35 EACH?! That's WRONG! I love those and want them! But, I WILL NOT pay $35 for EACH. Could you PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE lower the price down to $10 for ALL? PLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
    Sorry if I sounded rude though. Please reply to me!"

    It was a comment on a photo of 5, that's FIVE, hand-made plushes. Priced quite cheaply at $35 each.

    My response:

    "So you basically think that the time I spend sewing is worthless, and I should slave for you for less than the cost of materials? Sorry no. You can go fuck yourself. You've gone beyond rude and into special realms of entitlement. I will not work for nothing just because you demand it. If you want plushes for $10 go to WalMart, they have plenty. And I hope and pray that you're just a troll because nobody should be so moronic that they think that $10 for a set of 5 hand made plushes is a reasonable demand."

    And then I blocked them so they can't reply.

    It feels SO DAMN GOOD to be me some days.

    Funnily enough lately I've been getting a lot of comments about how my prices are way cheap and they're surprised I charge so little. I'm probably going to bump things up a bit in the near future. I'm sure this dillweed would be even more shocked and horrified when I want $40 each instead of $35. But they won't get a chance to tell me so, because they are blocked. It just sucks to be them.

    As always, thread is useless without pictures..but I've seen your work..$35 is low. You deserve much more for your work.

      Well, I don't want to just link to the DA post, that seems like it might be a bad idea. But here's a pic of the plush set in question.

        My little pony plush!! *squee!!!* Um I mean, yes those are worth more then $35 each. Glad you told the ew to take a hike. Wish I could afford them, but you will find somebody who can in no time.

          These ones are actually sold, and I've been commissioned to make another set. But merely going "sorry, they're already sold" to this twit just wasn't very satisfying.

            I'm so sorry Spark, apparently one of my EW's started bothering you. I'll let you borrow my taser though. Works great on cheap people.

              She is daft if she was serious. Your work is worth more than you charge for it and you should not be expected to work for less than nothing. Another person that you don't need in your life.

                *nods* Both of you honestly undercharge imo. Even after giving Kanalah a tip on the pillow cases she made me..I felt like I was way under paying for them. Me a poor boy, but I know quality when I see it.

                  I make enough to pay the bills, so I don't feel like I'm under charging. I don't want to price things so high I scare all my customers off, so my usual method is when I start getting a project list that's too long, then I raise my prices to cut down on future customers while still paying me enough to get by. Has always worked so far. Which is why I'm considering raising them again, the major project list is full six months out right now.

                    I am so impressed with the crafty people her.

                    And that person is an idiot and should be made to deal with customers

                      Just gotta add my AWWWW to the bunch, SO adorable.

                      I think I'd have told the emailer that if she wanted to pay dollar store prices, go to the dollar store and get dollar store quality. Ya can't get a Rolex for a Timex price.

                        Spark's painting of my cat is Teh Awesome and was very, very reasonably priced. I've seen print reproductions of famous paintings - admittedly, framed - go for similar prices.

                        And $10 wouldn't cover the cost of materials on those; not with the quality of material I believe Spark uses.

                        Now, I could make plush toys out of offcuts from my polar fleece winter wear and sell it for a trivial price: but it'd be way, way less wonderful than Spark's stuff.
                        * Polar fleece is not designed to be plush-toy material.
                        * I don't have Spark's practiced-skill at making plush toys.
                        * I wouldn't be doing it to make a living anyway. :P

                        2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                        4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

                            Spark, one of the benefits of being self-employed is being able to limit the level of stupid you want to deal with. Go read the Acts of Gord and let your evil side truly flower.

                              How big are they? If they're palm-sized (you can hold one in the palm of your hand) then I'd say $35 is pretty fair considering they were hand made. If they're bigger (think basketball sized), then I think they're cheaply priced.
