  • Asparagus Customer

Yesterday, a customer complained about the asparagus not being in water and claimed that the store was wasting lots of asparagus that way. We sell quite a bit of asparagus and most customers are fine with the asparagus they purchase. The customer wanted the store to get a new produce manager and mentioned that she was taking her business elsewhere. I offered to get the store director but she mentioned that she was in a hurry.

Water? I honestly don't think I've ever seen a store that keeps their asparagus in water, no matter how simple or gourmet the grocery store might be. I live in Maryland, though. Is it different any place else? Or is the woman just being an obnoxious bitch? Ok, so the answer to that question is yes.

I've seen plenty of asparagus in water. Of course it comes inside a can...

I've never seen fresh asparagus in water. That's actually a thing somewhere? Here, the stalks just come in bundles that are stacked by the rest of the produce.

ETA: Other MOD says she's never seen fresh asparagus in water, either, and she's older and more travelled than I am.

I've seen some produce sections that lightly mist their vegetables every so often. I can't remember if asparagus was one of them since I never shop for that stuff.

One of our stores not only heavily mists the vegetables, when they mist them, they dim the lights over the vegetables, and play storm sounds

Shallots/spring onions sold with the roots still attached, yes. Asparagus, no.

And I was told misting the produce does absolutely nothing to keep it fresh, it's a marketing exercise to make it 'look' sparkly-fresh.

                3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

I would assume that's true, bearing in mind that the produce is effectively "dead" as it isn't still planted.

                    Our local grocery does that!

Makes for a nice warning not to be leaning over them when the sprayer goes off.

They're always in a hurry, always don't have time to wait, but they sure do find the time to stop and complain

My store does, however, keep asparagus in cool water. As if they were being watered.

                          A quote taken from Angela's Ashes -

"I wish I had something to eat but there's nothing in the icebox but cabbage leaves floating in the melted ice. My father said never eat anything floating in water for the rot that might be in it."

So I think, crazy lady, that even poverty stricken people decades ago knew better than to fall for your shenanigans. Go peddle crazy someplace else.
Now, I'd like to digress from my prepared remarks to discuss how I invented the terlet...

One of our stores does that, too! It tripped me out the first time I saw it. I forget where I saw it, though. It's not a store I regularly frequent.

Hmmm, so it IS a thing. It doesn't seem to be a common thing, though.

One store (possibly the commissary) does that here. I've also heard some that play "Singing in the rain" right before they spray.
