I had a cart abandoned in my front yard by some loser once, it still had the deposit coin in the lock so I wheeled it back next time I went shopping... Seriously, the £1/€1 they "charge" over here doesn't discourage some people, especially if their alternative is trying to carry a full cart's worth of groceries onto a bus.

My Aid of Rite somehow ended up with a "Salad Greens" pharmacy's cart for about a month. It was a locking cart. The wires to the wheels to engage the locks had been cut.

We used to have poles on our carts until people figured out that you can just tilt the cart to get out the store and then take off with the cart anyway. So what's the point.
