  • D&D Camp Days 1&2 - Obstreperous Kidlets and Unacceptable Assistants

As some of you may remember, I am an employee of a Dungeons and Dragons camp. That means that, in essence, I play D&D with 4-8th graders for money. This is quite an enjoyable job. However, every job has its problems.

A couple highlights (or should I say lowlights) of the last couple days.

I wear a rather fancy fedora. I'm quite proud of it. During lunch, a small child stole this fedora, smacked me, smacked fellow college-aged assistant, who I shall call Navy*, and shoved my co-DM (who I shall call Twilight Sparkle**) into the ground (we were all sitting down.)

While none of us was in any way menaced by this small child, (My co-DM, is the smallest of the three of us and is still about twice the girl's size, she was just kind of surprised) this behavior seemed, well, extremely unacceptable.

The other behavior, from earlier today, was on the part of one of my fellow assistants (one of the highschool-aged ones) who I will call King*** smacked one of my players with a nerf sword. This guy is supposed to be in CHARGE, and setting an EXAMPLE. Not fighting with/throwing things at the students.

The other frustrating kiddlywink is the one who was getting smacked/throwing things at Henry. Last year he bought a knife to camp. This year he keeps trying to tell racist jokes (he assures us this is okay, because he knows black people.)

At least the racist joke-teller is a bit under control. He clearly has a crush on Twilight Sparkle (they're the same age, he's just been held back. So one grade difference, no age difference, not THAT creepy)

I just wanted to rant about this. On account of how frustrating it is.I love the camp, I really do. And a lot of these things are just the facts of dealing with children at a summer camp. Doesn't mean they're FUN, though. (Also, King should REALLY know better)

*He's going to join the navy
    **She LARPS as Twilight.
***Same name as a royal king

There is such a thing as D&D camp.

    ...

WHY didn't I know about this sooner!
If there’s one thing women love, it’s the guy that just can’t seem to find the line that divides “Ha Ha” and “Stacey, get your purse, we’re leaving before he comes back.”.

Because the world is a cruel arbitrary place that doesn't tell you that you can have your kids go to a D&D day camp.

Hey, I get paid to work at a game store, it is essentially D&D camp all the time here.

The LARP I play with sometimes runs a summer camp every year. They're allowed, nay, encouraged to hit the children with the swords.

Props on using 'obstreperous' in a post!

            Also, I second Balgram's comment... I'd attend this now, and I'm 41!

Man, I'd pay YOU to attend. We need more assistants who know the meaning of the word "Responsibility"

Also, the term "Obstreperous kidlets" comes from my ex Jacie. But it was too good not to use.

I run a pathfinder game on wensday night, I call it my Kiddie Game, all players are highschoolers, except my GF. Its her 2 kids and some of their friends. I would love to get paid to game. That would be a dream job. Players get unruly, kill off some characters or take there characters stuff that they have built up. So far that has worked for me to keep everyone inline.

I did that years ago... had to be around 1981 - 82. There was a middle school in my area that offered Saturday classes for kids like cooking, computers (TRS-80 Color Computer, bitches!) and both Basic and Advanced D & D.

                    Been hooked ever since.

I look forward to these D&D camp stories every year since HD started posting them. Hopefully we'll have more great stories of the kids as they don't quite get it.

we have star wars days here. we take pool noodles and cut them in half to make "lightsabers". the kids wrap different colors of duct tape on the end and they proceed to beat each other senseless for a couple of hours. all in a public library. most we had at one time was around 300 kids. i felt bad for the librarians and staff that day.

You know, if you live in the Seattle area, we have a monthly TT game at the AFK Tavern. Gamer's tavern open until like 3-4am every day of the week. Gaming camp for adults

The kid TOOK your Fedora, then SMACKED you with it?!?

What in the baby Jesus crying blood is WRONG with the kid?

You have my deepest sympathies, as I, too, own a rather fancy black fedora. I know that you NEVER take another person's fedora, much less smack them with it. >:/
People may think I am a Satanist, but I'm really not.

Why would I worship those that I rule?
