  • "Think of it as job security."

    Another story from my brother.

Years ago, he used to manage a movie theater. His staff loved him and he had the lowest turnover of any theater in the chain. This is one example of why.

My brother was off duty in the lobby of the theater waiting for a movie to begin. He wasn't dressed up in any way and looked just like another patron.

    YG - Young Guy
    B - Brother

YG- drops some popcorn on the floor. An employee comes over and sweeps it up with on of the push sweepers. Young guy then tosses more popcorn on the floor. The employee sweeps it up and this happens again.

YG to employee - Think of it as job security.

B who has been watching the whole thing stands up, takes the sweeper from the employee and holds it out to YG.

B- You can clean that up.

    YG- That's his job.

B- His job is to clean up spills. You're making a mess.

    YG- Yeah? Who are you?

B- I'm the manager and if you want to watch a movie tonight, you'll clean that up.

YG is apparently stunned to be called on his actions takes the sweeper and cleans up his mess.

B- What movie were you seeing?

    YG- *movie*

    B- Come with me.

YG- Looks smugly at the employee.

B Leads them to the ticket counter.- Refund him for his movie.

YG- You said we could see the movie if I picked up the popcorn.

B- I said you weren't going to see it unless you did. You're still not seeing it. You don't cause problems for my employees. They have enough to do without people making extra work for them.

YG- just stares at my brother as his plan to impress his girlfriend has suddenly exploded in his face. - But...

    B- Goodbye.
I'd tell you where to go, but I work there and I don't want to see you everyday.

Tell your brother that he's awesome! Reminds me of this tale, another rare manager with a spine making a nasty customer clean up and pay for their mess.

YG was trying to impress his girlfriend by acting like an arrogant brat and a litterbug? Any girl with two brain cells to rub together will dump this chump.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

While I applaud him for calling him out on his actions and making him clean up the mess he deliberately made, I totally don't agree with negating his promise after the SC reluctantly cleans it up.
Fiancee: We're going to need to do laundry. I'm out of clean pants.
Me: Sounds like a job for Gravekeeper!
      Fiancee: What?!
      Me: Nevermind.

I actually agree with it. The clown seems like the kind of person who would try something else for revenge and/or to try to "impress" is girlfriend.

I think it was good, preventative medicine.

People try pulling that crap with our cleaners. We've made them mop before!

Just before I left the fuzz we decided that instead of fining people for urinating in public we would give them a mop & bucket instead. Complaints of public urination dropped through the floor...

This sort of shit happened at Wal-Mart. People would see me sweeping the butts up and then throw one down right in front of me. Or see me pushing a long string of carts in sweltering weather and then just give thiers a shove down the hill.

Im glad Im not there anymore. Mis-management was bad enough, didnt need abuse from the customers as well.

ANOTHER story featuring an Awesome Manager With A Spine! It looks like this one got the Brass Balls upgrade, too.

Glad that Dbag got shown up in front of his date, too. Remember, you se what kind of person someone is by how they treat the staff.

There's an episode of Roseanne where this happens at Disney World.

Initially I thought the same as thehuckster: the kid had cleaned up his mess -- although certainly not happily -- and it had been indicated to him that he could see the show if he did.

However, Sheldonrs raises a good point: there's a good probability the kid would've wanted to reclaim his stud-cred with his girlfriend and done something else nasty on the basis of, "Think they can make me clean up my mess, do they?? Watch THIS!!" So on second thought, I think the manager did the right thing. The kid had already proven he was a jerk; why give him the opportunity to give another concrete example of it?

Yeah....my guess is that the manager initially did intend to let the guy in after he cleaned up, but decided agaisnt it upon further reflection, for the reasons that have been stated.

                          TheHuckster:

I understand your point but I don't see any promise being made by the manager in the original post - just simply the requirement that the mess the SC made would have to be cleaned up first.

And I think that Sheldonrs makes a really good point himself. If the SC was willing to make a mess in front of an employee for shits and giggles, no doubt he would have taken a bit of revenge later on for his embarrassment. Better to get rid of him now then risk more problems later on.

Or maybe, just maybe, the next time he wants to see a movie with his girlfriend he'll act like a human being and not a feces-flinging howler monkey.

But your thinking is good too.

At the very least he probably didn't get any that night.
