  • Could you hand me the change?

Is what I should've said. Between me and the customers is a 1 1/2 foot counter, plus a 9" platform for the card swiper to sit on. There's a crack between the counter and platform. It's really the only place they can put something down, and I have wearily come to understand that many, many people can't count change in their hands, so they need to set it down there to count it out. OK, I can live with that. But how hard is it, after I confirm that the change I see is correct, to hand it to me instead of making me move a sign and reach over my handscanner to get it? This guy expected me to lean over and pick up $2.40 all in coin. This kind of stuff makes my neck hurt. So I said to him that I couldn't reach it because leaning over is bad for my neck* and he didn't hear or didn't care or was thinking slow, so I walked all the way around the counter to get it, which made him look like a jerk. I felt kind of bad because he said thank you, and not in a sarcastic way at all, and I realized he just didn't realize it was rude, and now I think he sensed I was mad. So I did not handle that well.

*I shouldn't have to explain myself, but I'm working on trying to communicate more, rather than silently fuming. I was halfway successful this time.

Aww sweetie, sometimes customers tune us CSR's out. He should have been paying attention. If he had he probably would have handed you the change. Especially considering his apology.
I don't blame you for refusing to do something that would cause injury to your body. We don't get paid enough for that.

I love picking up change they leave on one of the stopped conveyor belts, mainly because it means I get to take my time doing something.

What I don't like, however, is when I put out my hand to intercept the change, and they have to reach around my hand to get those coins on the belt. Um? Hello? *waves*
