  • Nothing was good enough for Miss B*tch!

I got a call that a woman had lost her wallet at Eatery A. I go over and it's a regular who's always at the mall, middle-aged, a little...off, you know, but I've NEVER heard her be like this, though I know she can have strong opinions. She's yelling how it was right on her tray when she ate, she must have thrown it out, now WHO'S going to go through the trash for her!? I don my gloves and start checking the trash. No wallet. She complains the whole time I'm not digging deep enough (when, if she JUST ate, it would be on top). The employee asks if she used the bathroom and he will check for her. She screams at him no, she didn't use their bathroom and he's an idiot! All the while I'm trying to get information from her she's going on about how the mall is filled with thieves, she shouldn't have come here today, God was punishing her for not going to church, this shouldn't happen to her because she has nobody and nothing, etc. Nothing would calm her down. We retrace her steps to Store B, C and Eatery D, while I check every trash can along the way because sometimes people will steal/find a wallet and dump it after they've taken the money. I had my Coworker check with Store E, while Cleaning checked our restrooms. No wallet, and she was REALLY rude and swore at the employees of Store C who said she's not welcome back. By this time she seems convinced that this is a conspiracy on the part of ALL mall and store employees against her. She also begins yelling at me for not trying hard enough, I'm too calm so I obviously don't care about her and I have no idea what she's going through because I've had a man to take care of me all my life! I was starting to lose my temper and told her that no, I can't perfectly understand what she's feeling because it hasn't happened to me, but I DO CARE or I would not have emptied 8 cans of garbage for her, and no, I have not always had a man in my life, but I deal with my own problems.

It's obvious she didn't just lose the wallet, so we call the police to do a report. She's now screaming how it's taking them too long because they don't care about her, and if she does NOT get her wallet or $10 to get home and last her until her next check that she will NOT be leaving the mall! She complains about her wallet and our harboring of 'thieves' to every customer walking by! The Police arrive and she starts off being so insulting and rude to him that he says "Ok, have a nice day." and begins to drive-off! I have to cut her off like a 5-year old and talk sense into her, so he'll finish the report.

And then, she DEMANDS that the OFFICER give her $10 as compensation for her lost wallet and HIS rudeness! He actually laughs, which pisses her off more. I am just getting ready to ask her to wait so I can go to the ATM to get her $ when a lovely older lady (thank you you merciful spirit!) comes up and presses a $20 bill into her hand and tells her to use it to get home! What a lovely soul!

This sends my customer into a fit of tears, and then...A RANT about how a perfect stranger cared more about her then us jerks, then berates ME for not having $ to break the 20 so she can have bus fare! By that time the police were finished with her, and I had to walk away or I was going to say something I would regret.

Not 10 minutes later I get a call from an Employee of Store F. He remembered seeing a couple of unknown young African American Males (it's important!) go into an employee-only service hallway near where my customer had been when she lost her wallet. He decided to check back there and found her wallet in a trash bin back there, sans $10 of course. I DREADED going back to the customer, but did and gave her her wallet. Everything else was in there, so I began questioning the Store F Employee for a description of the suspects so I could try and remember them or keep an eye out; also to figure out if they picked it up off the store counter, of if they'd snatched it from her purse. He didn't recall much, but the questions about hair, skin, clothes, etc. triggered a deluge of racial ranting from the customer! I flat-out told her that I would not tolerate those comments on our Property, she had her wallet back so she better go wait for the bus, and that I would not be associating with her anymore so have a good night. She STILL did not get it as I walked away, saying "well it's all TRUE, you're just being too sensitive, but you never cared about me anyway!" At least now that she has been recorded as being inappropriate on our property, we have a basis to kick her out the next time.

What a psychotic piece of work!

I really, honestly thought this would end with the wallet in her hand or purse, or her magically finding it. It was bad enough as it was! I don't know how you dealt with that! She's lucky the police officer stayed to take her report!

What the....??? Oh my GOD. How did you not punch her in the back of the head???!!!
You know what really grinds my gears (besides you having to dig through garbage while LISTENING to garbage, that is) is that this moo-cow lost 10$ but ended up with 20$. No. Justice. period.

Yeah, I am a little disappointed that she ended up profiting from this embarrassing tantrum. By the end, especially after the racist bullshit, I would have no compunction about saying "No, I don't really care about you, because you seem like a truly awful, hateful person."

I love that argument. "You're too calm so you OBVIOUSLY don't care!!"

No ma'am, I am calm because I need to be rational in order to help you. Having both of us in screaming fits of immature rage will not help the situation, so please continue screaming at everyone with auditory factors within ear shot while I actually try to solve your problem.

Oh, and when I said continue screaming? I meant shut the fuck up before I gag you.

I would have been thrilled just to get my wallet back. Many documents in there are time consuming, tedious and expensive to replace. Woman was just a victim of her owns stupidity. I would have handed her some latex gloves and asked her to dig, sorry I Will not expose myself to bodily fluids or sharps for an EW.

That's what I thought too ... and of course somehow it would then turn out to be the employees' faults anyway because their lack of caring had made her so upset she'd missed it and blah and blah and blah ...

Yeah, that would've been my reaction too, I'm afraid. The first time I got the "You don't CAAAARRRRRE!!!" I could've ignored it, but the number of times she used that line, and then with her racist rant at the end ... yep, lady, now I really DON'T care, so shaddup and go home already!

While I can understand that she was upset - I got my wallet stolen earlier this year - she's clearly more than a little off... her meds perhaps?
I applaud your ability not to lose it, LilFilly. I couldn't do it! I would have throttled her!

I always felt it took a certain kind of person to get hostile and EW with a cop. Now I know for sure what kind of person that is. Sorry you and everyone around you had to put up with this. :/

Wait, she was freaking out about $10? You can make that in under 30 minutes by just panhandling and whining outside a gas station.

I'd be more worried about my cards possibly being stolen.

                        Wow... Ugh.

If my first thought was that I'd thrown my wallet away by accident, I wouldn't be asking who will go through the rubbish for it - I'd be asking if anyone could lend me some gloves so I can try & recover from my own mistake. There's no reason why someone else should have to deal with what (at that point) can be assumed as my own stupidity... Once that's ruled out, THEN I'd start asking for more help.
