  • Kids these days!

I work at a board game/Card game/rpg store. Had this one kid come in and this conversation.

    CB: clueless boy
    Me: well you know

Me: ya, that is the new pathfinder rpg, its sort of like D&D
CB: You mean its the book version of D&D?
Me: Umm, D&D is a book based tabletop game
CB: Really? I never knew. I thought it was a video game.

Dammit, I remember when there was no such thing as video games. Crazy kids these days.

Wouldn't the book version of D&D be... D&D?

And one of the first D&D computer games (from 1974, on a college computer) was called... DnD.
Why do they make Superglue but not Batglue?

He's probably thinking of "Dungeons and Dragons Online" which is a free-to-play MMORPG.

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

Way, way back in the undefined mists of time, my first husband would occasionally have a few of his shipmates over to the house, they'd sit around the kitchen table with lots of coffee, and stay up all night playing D&D. With some dice, pencils, and each one kept one of those old wire topped stenographer's tablets. At that point in time, you couldn't buy stuff for the game.....

        Sigh.

        Madness takes it's toll....

Every time I think of old school D&D I am reminded of the the gambling proficiency, "you are proficient at gambling." No rules, no more description, that's what you got! Don't ask me why that one always sticks with me. Probably because we were always like "ok..."

If it makes you feel better, My 18 year old sister and I play tabletop Dnd on a regular basis. Our dad used to hold games at our house, and he got us hooked.

I still have, somewhere, a bunch of books from about the third iteration of D&D. Should dig 'em out and check eBay . . . Probably not worth anything, though.

First & Second editions would be worth something I believe. Past that is when D&D become a bit more popular and so many more books were printed and so the value of them has gone down, especially since many people still prefer 3rd and 3.5 over 4th (which I don't understand, but whatever, it's their choice lol.)

I have a friend who has taught his kids to play as well. He occasionally offers them bonus experience points for their characters to get them to go to bed on time.

I love your introductory sentence ...

This reminds me of the first time I saw a (not cheap) board game version of 'Battleship.' You know, the one where you and your opponent used to draw a grid on a couple of pieces of scrap paper, mark a few squares where your battleships were, and then call out grid numbers to try and hit your opponent's battleship ...

In my case, it was "Use my Maggot Nations."

In my day, there was basic D&D, and Advanced D&D, which everyone called A.D.&D....(rambles on, shakes cane at kids, tells them to stay of the lawn..)

I've gotten that whole "D&D is a video game" thing too. I was saying something to a friend online about a game, and another person wandered into our chat area. It was a bit of a confusing conversation. I said something about making a Tiefling Rogue, and he said "u cant play a tiefling!" I said "Well that's up to the DM." (3rd ed didn't have them as standard racial options). He kept saying "no u cant!" and finally I was like "Look, I've been playing this for 30 years" and he was totally baffled because the online game was probably a year old at that point.

This is making me miss the good old dungeon crawls. Traps and creatures around every corner, mysterious unlocked chests (Hint..if it is unlocked..it is either empty..or a trap), trying to figure out where a skeleton kept those few silver pieces I found..and maybe not WANTING to know...

Regardless if it was a critical hit backstab, or a backfired fireball..it was always exciting..too bad nobody around here plays *sighs*
Engaged to the amazing Marmalady. She is my Silver Dragon, shining as bright as the sun. I her Black Dragon (though good honestly), dark as night..fierce and strong.
