  • Oh well, your driver's license! Yep that's acceptable payment!

I haven't posted about this customer because we *thought* he had learned his lesson. But we were wrong

Ever since I have worked at this store, this person has been coming in and demanding special treatment. For example, he didn't have transportation for a long time, so he walked to the store. Because of that, he wanted all of his purchases to be TRIPLE bagged. Okay, I understand that - you're walking, you want to make sure stuff doesn't rip through your bags. But ... even when all you're buying is a few boxes of candy???? That is just unnecessary waste of resources (not to mention it costs the store money to replace those bags so that other customers can get them).

About 6 months ago or so, I started to see a pattern with his purchases. He would come in and buy THE most expensive candy boxes that we sell, and pay for them with EBT/SNAP/food stamps, whatever it's called in your area. Okay, I don't have a problem with that, as such. However, he would then, within a day or two, return that candy without a receipt. Returns without a receipt means you get a store gift card. Fine.

A few days after that, he would come in with this gift card and buy non-food items. So, in essence, what he was doing was scamming the food stamp program so that he could buy non-food items, while getting the state to pay for them. (I hope this makes sense - he was using food stamp money to buy the things he really wanted).

Once I realized what he was doing, I went to Store Manager about it. Why didn't anyone else?? I don't know. Anyway, SM said that he is no longer allowed to make any returns without a receipt. SM stated it was clear that he was scamming the system and it wasn't going to happen anymore. YAY!

Cue 6 months later ... yesterday. This person *has* learned his lesson, in that he no longer buys candy and tries to return it. However, yesterday just proved that he hasn't learned anything at all

He came in to the pharmacy and wanted oxycotin (sp?) He NEEDED it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When asked how he would pay for it, he said (and I kid you not) "I can pay for it tomorrow! You can keep my driver's license to make sure I come back and pay!!"

REALLY?????? Excuse me while I In what universe did you think this would be alright? And especially with the fact that oxycotin is a heavily controlled substance? AND your previous history of scamming the system?

I have no words. That is all.

I'll say them for you. Are you getting high before you take that drug?

Of *course* he'll be able to pay for it *tomorrow*. By then he'll have sold it. But he won't come back and pay for it, because he doesn't really need a driver's license. Besides, getting a new one is still cheaper than paying for a script of Oxy without insurance. Dude isn't actually stupid, since he's developed a pretty complex system for getting things for free and until you came along, it had been working quite well.

It's amazing the amount of effort some people will put into avoiding what they perceive as 'work'.

This dude sounds like the twin brother of the moron who ordered a drink at my bar and, when I asked him for his ID, he said "I don't have my ID with me...but I have a credit card!"

That's great, dude. Having a credit card proves you're of legal age...how?

Pretty much the same logic as trying to pay (or leave a deposit for payment, if you will) with one's driver's license.

The idiots continue to breed, it seems.

A fellow delivery driver had almost the same thing happen. Driver delivered to a hotel. The guests had trouble getting up the money. the guest then says: (you could almost hear Wimpy's voice saying) "Here is my (out of state) driver's license. I'll come by the store tomorrow morning and settle up the bill."

Driver just walks away with said pizza and returns to the store.

fyi if you know someone is scamming with their assistance funding, you might also want to consider reporting it to the local authorities.

If my crack-using ex-GF was telling the truth about this sort of thing: that is not rare with drug dealers.
