  • What do you expect me to do?

There are a few work related things I need to complain about.

    Drunk People

So last night at about 3 am (I work night shift at McHell) I got a car load of people with a fairly large order. They were quite obviously drunk or something. It took a bit to get their food together and even with the window shut I could hear them yelling and just generally being drunken idiots.

There are two cars behind them, both with really small orders. When the next guy gets to the window I ask him how he was doing and he says “Well, I’d be a lot better if I didn’t have to wait behind that. I have to wait a long time every time I come in here!”

Okay look people, I really am sorry you have to wait behind idiots but what do you want me to do? I am absolutely not going to have them pull up because it’s 3 in the morning, they’re drunken idiots and there is just so much that could go wrong there. I’m not going to risk my health and safety just so you can get your late night McD’s fix. Seriously, this is a big city, drive 10 minutes in any direction and you’ll find another 24 hour store.

Sadly, this isn’t the only time it happened. A few weeks ago there was another truck load of drunk people and once again the guy behind them had a very small order and as I’m handing him his food he says “I’m not trying to tell you how to run your business, but you should have had them pull up so other people don’t have to wait!”

<-- This is how I feel when I'm at work.

Can we have some help on the weekends? Please?

Night shift at my work consists of two people. Even on Friday and Saturday nights. This is partly due to the fact that both night shift people quit a couple weeks ago and I am the only other person willing to work it, but really, you don't need another person to work 10-6. Have them get off at 2. That would do wonders and I'm sure there are people willing to do it if you just ask.

Anyways, like I said, two people even on the busy nights. Now, there is no cash register hooked up to the front drive through computer so what we do is put in orders on the front counter registers. So I can put in two orders at a time and I have to write down the rest and punch them in as people pay. This works fine on most night but on weekends it doesn't.

We have two drive thru lanes and for whatever reason they won't shut the second one down when I'm the only person taking orders sosometimes I don't hear the second one beep, or if the person on the first lane is taking too long, they just drive to the window.

Saturday night we're really busy and these people come to the window and I ask them what their order is.

Guy: Well, we were in the second lane and no one took our order so we just drove up here. We want two four piece nuggets and two cokes. (Or so I thought that's what he said. There are fans blowing and stuff beeping and he isn't talking very loud.)
Me: (After I get the food.) Here you go. Would you like any sauce?
Guy: Yes, buffalo sauce. Are there three orders of nuggets in here like I asked for?
Me: Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you only said two. I'll be right back with the other. (I don't know if I misheard or if he was trying to scam me out of four nuggets. At this point I don't care.)
Guy: Can I have some bbq sauce (What I thought he said.)
I hand it to him and..
Lady Passenger: NO, WE WANTED BUFFALO SAUCE. BUFFALO!!!#!@!!! (As she throws her bag of food at her car windshield.) THIS IS THE WORST MCHELL I'VE EVER BEEN TO!!!!@!@!##!!

I have to mention the guy was calm and at no time raised his voice or anything. I'm really glad he was driving because if she was I'm pretty sure I would have had something thrown at me.

On weekends it's normal for people to be waiting at least 15-20 minutes on food. But you know what? There's nothing I can do. I'm only one person and I can't do everything. I don't get yelled at very much though. Most people just give me the pissed off look and the silent treatment. Some people (amazingly enough) realize that we're shorthanded and even tell me to have a good night.

You really waited until now to ask me?

I've came to the conclusion that the people I work for are not very smart. We started being open 24 hours back in May. The district manager, store manager and other managers had a meeting over it a full month beforehand. Do they hire any night shift people? Nope. Do they ask any existing employees to do it? Nope. And this is where I learned I need to keep my mouth shut. When I'd learned that we might be going 24 hours I'd told one of the managers that I might want to work one night a week. I mean, why not? I'd sort of worked night shift (Not really night shift, it was 6pm-2am) at my last job. They asked me to do it one day before the first night. It was supposed to be for just one week. Then the night shift started quitting. Honestly though, I can't blame them. If I have to deal with any more weekend nights there with just me and the manager working I'm probably next.

God I hate people who are sitting their warm/air conditioned car, listening to music, comfortable and everything, and throw a complete bitch-fit that their food took more than thirty seconds.

Oh no, you had to wait in your cushy car while the poor peon getting your food has been on her feet for at least three hours, being yelled at, and probably uncomfortably hot all the time - yes many are A/C'd but if your order window is close to the cooking station then it's still hot.

    GAHH!

You have my sympathy and lots of magical internet rainbow cookies. I also suggest casting a net out for new jobs if you can, because this kind of stress sounds like it might quickly start negatively affect your health. It never hurts to look, right?

It's so I can get ideas out of my head, I decided to put it in a blog in case people are bored or are curious as to the (many) things in progress.

Thanks The places I can work are a bit limited right now because I have no car and I have to walk a mile in any direction to get pretty much anywhere. And the buses in this city suck. The nearest bus stop is 3 miles away so I only take that if I have to. I know it would be in my best interest to find another job and it's something I've definitely been looking into. My options are limited but the one I have now isn't my only option.

I'm hoping to fix the car situation soon and this is my last semester of college so hopefully I'll be able to find a job in my field soon after that.

And you know what's really funny? Literally seconds after my post my store manager called me. They hired someone else to work night shift. I did have tomorrow night off but they needed to change my schedule so now I work tomorrow night but I'm off Saturday. Heh, yeah, no problem there.
