This guy would have been completely offended to find out that, despite being from The South, millions of foreigners the world over would consider HIM a "Yankee."
True. We would call him a "Seppo" here down under. Since most of you probably don't know where that name came from, it is rhyming slang.

Yank sounds like septic tank, which becomes seppo. Doesn't matter to us if you consider yourself a southerner or a yankee, to us you are all seppos.

I went to culinary school oh so many years ago, but the general definition of "Western" food that we were given was basically that it is a generalised term collectively referring to the cuisines of Europe and other Western countries

BeeMused -- I sit corrected hence my uncertainty. Thanks!

As for the topic...My best guess would be, "Western" food could very well be defined as "Anything an American refers to as 'American food/cuisine'".

If someone came up to me and asked where's the western food, I'd say, uhhh, you mean Chinese? Or California? And if they looked at me like I were an idiot, I'd given them that look right back! Either be clear or be expected to clarify. I'm not a mind reader. Ooh how I wish I could kick those that expect their mind to be read in the pants!

More like "Katzenjammer" (cat misery) or "Kater" (tom cat), both come from "Katarrh" = old fashioned word for any illness or pain in or near the head.
So wait, that old newspaper comic, the Katzenjammer Kids, is the Pain-in-the-Head Kids? Now it makes sense.

We in the Pacific Northwest actually do kind of have our own cuisine. There is a heavy Asian influence here; so that comes into play, but we like mainly light dishes for local cuisine. Lots of chicken, fish (salmon or halibut are popular) cooked with local ingredients (planking fish or chicken on local cedar for example.) We do a lot of cooking with our native herb, dillweed, which grows in abundance in Washington, Idaho and Oregon (a local favorite is planked salmon cooked with plenty of dill.) Potatoes are another thing we like, considering Idaho is part of the region and grows some of the best spuds in the country, as well. We love our local cheddar and are quite proud of things made with Tillamook cheese. Hazelnut is another local favorite. For an essentially Pacific Northwest take on fast food, try a Burgerville sometime if you're in the area. They make food with all local ingredients, or you could stop by the Tillamook Cheese Factory at the coast, since they sell more than cheese. We also enjoy our game in some parts of the state, something we have in common with Alaskans. Oh, yes, and while we may not make the best beer in the country, Oregon has a TON of microbreweries and wineries making good drinks.

I have never heard of the nanaimo bar.

And now that I have, I want one.

Speaking of Southerners, I got into an argument in a bar once with a Southerner, who insisted that, since I was not from the South, I was a Yankee.
I don't believe he was really a Southerner - one of my Southern friends insists the correct term is "damnyankee"

I must respectfully disagree with you, as Oregon produces some of the best beer in the country, thank you very much. Once on Facebook, I actually proposed to Rogue Brewery. Yes...the entire brewery.

I don't think he was a "real" Southerner, either, as I know plenty of Southerners, and for the most part, they are nice, good, awesome people. This guy was just a raging dickhead, who happened to be from the South.
