  • Why complain to me?????

I had two of these "winners" (or whinners) in the last week. Unfortunately they BOTH came from the same place.

Now we all know that some people just want to bitch and complain about the Delivery Charge (henseforth known as the DC). HEck we as drivers do the same thing ALL the time. BUT....

We have a truck repair facility that is about 3 blocks away. Now for some reason the staff there hate or at best dislike our company (as in 99% of deliveries are literally straight stiffed) for any order large OR small.

Now I just found out WHY they seem to dislike us. That dislike seems to stem from the DC ($2.25). Just in the FACT that we charge that DC they dispise and reville us as a company (and for some reason us drivers personally).

I took a phone call from a person at this facility. They wanted us to give them the $10 CARRY OUT ONLY special for delivery. I explained to them that even though they were 3 blocks away from us, the special is what the special is and we can not change it. He then proceeded to moan and complain about how the $10 carryout special was unfair and then proceeded into complaining about the DC AND how he had to actually TIP thje driver on top of the DC. He then spat that he was going to call JImmy Johns and order from them as THEIR delivery was free and hungup.

A couple of nights later I got a delivery to the facility (single pie OH JOY). I get there and check the driver/customers lounge, then go to the shop counter. As I arrived the parts manager just looked at me with utter contempt. He yelled out into the shop for the person who ordered the pizza.

While I was waiting he started to complain. He complained about the DC, the fact we were only 3 blocks apart, TIPPING, us losing "BIG" money from them NOT ordering from us, etc. He literally went on for 5 minutes on his tirade. All the while I tried to explain/"reason with"/educate him to no avail. I really wanted to tell him that we (drivers) dislike HIS company because of the manner of treatment of us (drivers) ie. treating us like dirt under their shoes AND not tipping 99% of the time.

Yes I know I am the face of the company BUT if he has THAT much of a problem with all of the above but I really wanted to tell him to get about 50 million of his "friends" and start calling/texting/Facebook/Twitter/Yelp/etc. and complain to either the franchise or ALL of the Big 3 about the abomination that is the DC.

I think he ment his tirade as a "message" but as we all know that "message" just pisses off the driver and only the driver and lowers our opinion of humanity in general.

I ran into this type of situation several times this past week. If they are soooo dissatisfied with the company, why do they keep ordering from it? People here just really like to complain. I'm quite sick of it.

and that is the point I tried to make with him. Complaining to ME is NOT going to get "things taken care of".

Yeah the company makes money from their orders but we the drivers do NOT but are expected to take the shit thrown at us.

Just out of interest, what would your boss say if all the drivers refused to deliver to that company?

_Exactly_ my thought as well, a permament ban-hammer is definitely needed here. And if they aren't tipping that's no real hardship to the drivers anyway...

Sounds like his resolve didn't last long though since they called you back for more within a week...

You make me really want to go back and work for this company. Sad thing is people would make a big deal about the $1.00 fee. And don't get me started on the at the time .25 check fee. I had one lady go on such a tirade about that, that I wanted to tell her if 25 cents is such a hardship, maybe she shouldn't be ordering pizza.

One thing I don't get, if the place is only three blocks away, why can't one of their employees pick up the pizza?

I said something like that to a guy ahead of me in line at Aldis. He was making a little stink about how the cabbage or lettuce there at Aldi's is 5 or 10 cents more than at the big grocery chain up the street. I think I said to him, "if you're worried over such a small amount, then you shouldn't be buying $50 worth of food.."

As far as the pizza place, shouldn't you be calling the cops. After all, there's an INVISIBLE GUN being held to their heads ordering them to order pizza from your chain...

People, in general, are VERY uneducated about the way tipped employees are compensated. Having worked in restaurants and pizza for 18 years, I've heard some interesting thoughts from customers on what they assumed was the truth...a few of the most common:

-That delivery drivers get the delivery fee (they don't, or at least not the whole thing, at most places, FYI)
-That delivery drivers use company-owned cars (RARELY is this ever the case; most of the time delivery drivers pay for their own fuel, vehicle wear-and-tear, and insurance)
-That waitstaff get paid regular minimum wage PLUS tips (in my state, OH, waitstaff minimum wage is HALF of standard minimum wage, and tips are supposed to make up the difference)
-That the cooks get part of the tips, so the tip should be based on whether the kitchen staff did their jobs in addition to how the service was (I've never worked in a kitchen, or heard of a kitchen, where the cooks shared in the tips)
-That tips aren't taxed (ACTUALLY, servers are taxed on tips whether they get them or not, based on the assumption that they WILL get tips)

And, those are just a sampling...I had one guy that assumed that I-the manager of the restaurant-would keep some of the servers' tips...not sure how that idea got planted in his head.

In California, some places I worked for gave tips to the kitchen staff, including the one I am at currently

I was gonna go with "Because then they don't get a captive employee to snivel and whine at.", but this is much funnier:

                        What icmedia said 8p

                        - I have almost never heard of any place that gives the drivers part of the delivery fee (it is, in theory, something that is generally implemented in order to delay a menu-wide price hike)

To the OP: If they're willing to listen (unlikely), maybe ask the SM to write up a brief letter explaining that the driver's do NOT get that delivery fee, and leave copies of it there when you go to deliver.

                        - I have never heard of a food delivery place that provides drivers with vehicles

                        - Half-wage to waiters: common

                        - Tipping out cooks: some places yes, some places no. There are also places that make wait staff tip out to managers, which may or may not be legal, depending on one's jurisdiction.

My store does have a company owned truck for deliveries. For that matter, when i first started working there, we had several trucks, until the company decided to move to driver owned vehicles. Of course, because the company is still paying insurance for the one truck per store that they kept, someone had to drive the truck instead of their car.

I've gotten plenty of complaints about our delivery charge (3.00), but since I don't set company policy I usually just ignore them. Besides, the company has to maintain it's vehicles and pay compensation to drivers who use their own vehicle. A business isn't going to lose money delivering to you just so you don't have to get off your fat ass to pick up a pizza.

When my customers bitched about the delivery fee (which was $3.00 at the time), I would just point out that the lowly pizza driver standing on his/her doorstep had just made it unnecessary to get dressed, climb into the car, fight traffic and weather, or miss his/her favorite TV show. And isn't it worth a miserable couple of bucks to avoid ALL THAT to enjoy hot pizza in the comfort of your own home?

It usually shut them up in a hurry.

Great answer, because unless there's a blizzard going on, or the heat index is life-threatening, the only excuse for not going three blocks to pick up their pizza is laziness.
