  • We're not a daycare service

Just a refresher, I work in a porn store. You have to be 18 years old to come in. For some people, they think babies are an exception. NO they aren't! People think that oh hey, a baby won't remember anything. You know what? It doesn't matter, if you aren't 18 years old or older you are not allowed in our store at all. We can be fined.

I was talking to a customer about lubes when my store manager started to call for me. At first I kind of ignored it since I was trying to make a sale and just thought that she wanted to see where I was.
I was vaguely told about some lady who was in the doorway with her baby. Now I thought I was just supposed to make sure she didn't come in while waiting for a friend to finish shopping.

    Again, no. I was wrong.

SC: "I wanted to buy some panties."
Me: (still confused) You want me to hold your baby?
SC: "Yes." *proceeds to hand over baby who is crying and screaming.

Now I've held babies quite a few times but when they're screaming and squirimg like this lil guy was, I panic a little like I'm doing something wrong. He keeps squirming and fidgeting but I keep adjusting him in my arms so I don't drop him or something. I try talking in a soothing voice and smile. Finally the kid calms down and just stares at me, so I start rocking him tell his mom getz back. And low and behold! Not a damn thing in her hands, apparently we didn't have the right panties.

Afterwards, I talk to my manager and say how baffled I was. She proceeded to tell me that the lady refused to accept the fact that she couldn't bring a baby in. She even tried running pass the manager. WTF?
The lady was going to like leave the kid in the doorway, which M wasn't going to let happen. SC instisted that we should watch the kid. (Uh, not our job?!) M was with a customer already so she grabbed me to take care of this.

Totally bizarre! But cute kid, I'm glad he calmed down.

I suspect that the reasoning behind the "babies are exempted from porn shop rules" applies based on the following (stupid) concepts:

-Babies do not have the receptive language skills to understand that the shop is full of "mummy and daddy" toys.
-Baby may/may not be asleep and thus can't see all the huge shiny penises and fleshlights.
-Baby may not associate any of the toys or images with special "mummy/daddy" stuff.

Sort of along those lines. >.>

I think also some people think babies are like service dogs in that they are allowed absolutely everywhere no matter what the regular rules say.

The manager should have LET her leave her kid outside, then called the police due to the abandoned infant on the property.

The kid calmed down because he/she/it decided you were seriously interesting.
          Kid got taste, IMHO.

I think the concern might not just be the people trying to blame the store years down the road for any 'deviant tendancies' they notice in their child and say "hey, it must be when that PORN STORE LET MY BABY IN!', or even trying to scam for free stuff or money because they 'felt so uncomfortable having to bring their baby in a porn store' , but also that they could easily hide things on the baby or in a carriage; a screaming child is a good distraction!

Wow, bad job mommy. Shopping for sexy clothes outweighs taking care of your baby? Pity the child.

I would have told her in no uncertain terms that staff are not available to hold or watch children. I can't even imagine the nightmare of liabilities lurking there . . . .

I would've thought babies under 9 months would be allowed in, because of a lack of awareness. But I don't have any babies and I don't go in porn shops. I guess you learn something new every day.

It might also make other customers nervous. Who wants to shop for adult toys and movies with kids around? It's just creepy.

Also, Mom of baby, that's what the internet is for!

Mommy could have found the exact panties she wanted online and without being a pain to employees and fellow customers. And gah, I still shudder at the thought of handing a baby off to a complete stranger! Double mother fail!
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

I can understand the logic of "babies won't remember," but if the policy is 18+, mother-of-the-year there needs to buy her sexy underwear another time, end of story.

Who lets a stranger hold their kid, anyway?

Seven or more years ago, some random woman behind me in line at a Food Lion once had me hold her baby so she could do something with the PIN-pad.

I didn't understand it myself, but she was exotic-looking (I want to say Indian) and her baby was adorable. I never thought about what it might mean for her to let me hold her baby. I was too happy over exotic baby's cute little face.

It was probably done in my case because she was right there, the cashier was right there...etc. Still, I don't know if I would do it.

I volunteered to hold a baby once. I was working/on my lunch break in uniform, and I happened to walk past a young woman holding her baby and looking confusedly back and forth between said baby and the door of the customer toilet, as if she was thinking... how do I pee, without putting the baby down?

I put her out of her misery and took the baby so she could use the bathroom lol. But he was a teeny eight month old sweetheart, and by the time she came out, he and I were firm friends
Now, I'd like to digress from my prepared remarks to discuss how I invented the terlet...

So there are porn stores at every corner but a pharmacy or grocery store is 2 states over or something? I just don't understand why she didn't go to a regular store to buy panties. Oh, she needs special panties for that special night with her s.o.? Sounds like the type of person to leave her baby outside the front door for two hours while she gets it on.
