Bit of a B/G, I work for a national moving and storage company. End of B/G

We all know about hurricane/nor'easter Sandy. At my job at HQ, I take calls from all of our locations in the country, and as you can assume, many of our locations told us that due to Sandy, they're closing up shop. I was delegated to call all customers in the affected area that whatever service they may have expected over the next couple of days will not be rendered, and to reschedule for a later date. Most seemed fine, some even expected my call. a few, however, are beyond the reach of sanity.

Me: "Hi, Mr. Smith? I regret to tell you that due to Sandy we must reschedule your service to a later date."

SC: "Why! I have movers lined up! This storm isn't my fault! You will render service for the day I need!"

Me: "Sorry, there is no way we can help you with that."

    SC: "Then, I demand compensation!"

Me: "For what? (Company) isn't responsible for this storm, so (Company) can not compensate you for any inconvenience."

And so it goes. People, please understand one thing; we do not pay you if an act of God gets in the way. May you all be safe, but I hope a few asshats get beat around a bit. GRRRRR.

Dont worry, even if the weather was perfect and the move was going as usual, they would still call and whine/bitch trying to get a discount because "the movers were smelly, they dropped my box of fragiles, and the box with my paperwork in it that had a cup of coffee on top has coffee on the papers now" (Thought I would give a nod to the past).

I really wonder how many pizza/food delivery places MADE their employees come in and work AND ACTUALLY delivery food during the storm????

Because it's far too dangerous for the customers to go out, but quite OK for the delivery drivers.

I can only assume that they think 'Hey, if something happens to one of them, there's plenty more where they came from'

That's the attitude many customers (not to mention employers) seem to have with their employees. They don't care, as long as they get their products...

I mean, I delivered newspapers in subzero temperatures, blizzards, driving rains, floods, and other disasters. Probably not a good idea, but I had bills to pay. It was either deal with it, or take a hit to the wallet. Would I do that again now? Hell no. In bad weather, I'd simply fit my wagon with a large Rubbermaid box in the bed, and an annoying flashing red rear light. At least the narrow tires meant that I wouldn't get stuck. However, if there was more than an inch of water on the street...the wagon would develop some interesting 'handling characteristics!'

well I admit i've ordered pizza during bad weather - snow or rain - but NOT during blizzards or hurricanes though. And I did what I guess you can call a "shitty weather tip" - if the weather is shitty they get a better tip.

Ditto. I've ordered food in shitty weather because I wasn't willing to go out in it.

However, as with PepperElf, I add "hazard pay" to my tip in such situations. After all, they made it possible for me to avoid having to drive in shitty conditions; that deserves compensation beyond the typical.

I always found it fascinating that, back when I worked at DaddyJim's pizza, our walk-in business was 2-3x busier than normal, and deliveries tended to taper off a bit. Maybe we actually had a decent customer base..? o_O

I did love one of the few times we literally HAD to shut off delivery for a while due to flooding. The roads were not safe for anything shorter than, say, a Hummer to make it through safely. We did get a couple of calls, one of which was about 4 blocks away from us. They were cool, just confused as to why we had closed down delivery...We asked where they were, and replied, "Have you looked outside your front door, Ma'am?" -- She responded in the negative, and set the handset down to do so. 30 seconds later came her response: "Never mind O_O I'll call back later! ^_^"

Pepper if cusstomers like you were the norm, the situation would be a LOT better.

ALas some of the crappiest tipping I have ever had have been during blizzards and crappy weather like torrential downpours (not hurricanes).

4 years ago during a wail of a blizzard (and no we were not allowed to even shrink the delviery area) I had a 65% stiff rate. I just recently had a shift during Welfare Week that finally surpassed that percentage (no bad weather just an "ordinary night").
