We tried to get a last-minute room in London, Ontario, a couple years ago, but everything was booked.
As I was standing in the lobby of one hotel, some woman was barking at the edesk clerk about how she had to cancel her reservation and didn't feel she should lose her deposit since there were people waiting who wanted to rent it.
Sorry, no can do. (I don't fault him - he was doing his job).
I did stay until she left, then walked up to him and asked, "Hey, now that the idiot's gone, can I rent her room? I promise I won't tell her."
Nope.
No harm in trying, though.
