I'm with Cessi! We have enough freaks to deal with. There are so many pathetic people who come to the library when it opens at 9am and don't leave until 9pm. They are here 5 sometimes 6 or even 7 days a week. They aren't doing research either; they're there to look at porn and hit on other unsuspecting patrons.

Would i be considered a sucky customer?

I am not as bad as that guy but I will set down with a couple of books and skim through them to see which one I would like to buy. Sometimes it will take me more then 15 minutes to get through the books, but I always but them back and 99% of the time I buy one the books I am looking at. I just do not like spending money on something if i am not sure if it is what I am looking for.

dont think they dont do all of that at the B&N, though. and we don't close until 10 or 11pm. two of the regulars that do this have that "i just rolled in manure, haven't bathed in six weeks, and havent brushed my teeth since 1972" smell about them.

and that's cool. at least you put them back. i think its more of the asshats that don't buy anything ever and don't put anything back ever. or think its funny to leave the kama sutra in the kids department.

Exactly...the people who take out half a shelf of books, sit there for hours, and then leave them in a heap on the floor with their *almost* empty coffee cup sitting on top are the ones we want to beat. After I left Store1, my ex told me about a group that was apparently planning some kind of vicarious vacation...they would come in periodically and each time take a copy of practically every travel book on whatever country they were "visiting" that week, and sit at one of the square mission tables with them. They never bought anything, and when they were done they just left them on the table. The staff had gotten complaints from people who were actually looking to buy something about that country and there was almost nothing left on the shelves. Ex finally had to say something to them and they just didn't (want to) understand why it was a problem. And all he was asking them to do was only take a few books at a time, and put them back before taking more to look at so there was something for other customers to shop.

And the kama sutra in the kids department just makes me .

i4wolves - That "inviting" atmosphere is meant to bring in the people who want to sit and look through things to decide what they want to buy. We want you to be sure you want what you're buying - cuts down on returns! So don't worry, you're all good.

In my shop, we have the Mangas in plastic covers. No one wants to read, what someone else opened up, book wise. I also read the first chapter, just to see if I would like it

Ok, I will fess up to sitting with a book in BN, but I have a good excuse...I promise.

My oldest dd is also an avid reader and likes for me to take her so she can pick up a couple of books every so often. She is also notoriously slow sometimes, so I will go grab a drink from the cafe and a book to skim through and find a comfy place to sit until she is done. Sometimes I do end up buying the book, but if I don't I make sure to place it back where I got it from and I take my cup with me rather than leave it one the floor or table.

I LOVE Barnes & Noble!!! My husband hates to take me though, since I can drop large amounts of money there. What can I say? I'm an avid reader and he knew that when he married me.

I love getting an iced Chai tea and picking out books to buy. If I do sit down in the Cafe with a book and I like the book I will buy it, but if I don't like it I will actually return it to where I found it.

My children love going too. I'm glad they are into reading as much as I am. My little guy is into the Captain Underpants books and loves nothing better than to read them to me. My daughter is into books about dragons and magic. The big guy is into any books on computers.

My husband loves history, so we often compare who spent more on books, him or me.

You will often find my family waiting for me in the Cafe, since I have to decide what books I want to buy and which ones have to wait till next time.

I agree 100% with BookstoreEscapee. We have regulars, who we sometimes name.

For a while, we had the Grisham guy. I think he read every single John Grisham book in the course of a couple of months. Since there's been no new books, he stopped coming around. Usually sat in the chair 6-9 hours and never bought anything more than a tall coffee.

We have this old guy that comes in. VERY old. Gotta be pushing 100. Can't walk well. Loves to read. Walks in within an hour of closing, stays 7 hours, leaves. Every. Single. Day. Should we just hire him?

Teenagers. We have a high school behind our small shopping area. The emo and geeky () kids head to one corner for Sci Fi and Manga. The "I'm too pretty for school" girls go to cafe to get a tall frap (usually Strawberry) to share while reading teen and fashion magazines in the cafe. The "I'm too cool for everything" kids head to the comfy chairs with magazine and hidden sex books.

Then we have the home remodelers. That section is right next to our comfy chair section, so naturally, the leave the books on the table. We know that when it's raining, like this weekend, the section will be fairly left alone. When it's sunny, the whole section will be on the floor.

I already have a headache for work today....

I think this is referring to computers in public libraries...but I haven't been to one in a while so I don't know if porn is blocked or not. I think there was an issue a while back at my local library about the right of people to look at porn since it's a public library, but still.....ew.

I think they put the comfy chairs near the home reference section on purpose. Whenever I went to clear that table I would take a v-cart, sort out the home reference from the rest, and take the rest to the recovery cart. Home ref I would pile on the windowsill. No point in dragging all those huge books up front for someone else to carry back.

years ago i worked at a library and i know it was a rule you couldn't view porn on the library computers. And they had to post signs at every computer saying porn is not allowed, and if you choose to look at it, you will be asked to get off the computer.

Yeah, on busier days we do that too. I have an "anger" issue, and usually make as much noise and get in their way while I load up the cart or put stuff back (it's usually within 5 feet) just hoping they'll go away.

Which reminds me of another group! We have these two women who come in once a week or so, sometimes less. They grab 5-6 titles each from the New Romance bay, sit in the chairs, and read. We know they've been around when all the book are in the bay. :P
