  • RAM for laptop

I have an older laptop that works fine, except that it's damned slow. I was thinking of adding RAM to it, and here's where I reveal my technical ignorance on such matters:

If I replace the RAM card already in it, will that effect what is already saved there? Or is the computer memory separate from that?

It's an HP ProBook 6460b, if that helps.

The RAM is temporary memory for the CPU to do its work, your files are stored on a hard drive. Depending on what operating system you are running ram may help, but with the age of the computer it also might not. Looking at the specs you might be better off switching out the hard drive for an SSD, something like a Western Digital Blue drive are reasonably priced on Amazon and have a really good reputation.

The Ram gets cleared every time to power down. You will lose nothing by replacing them.

      Onto what you can use...
That laptop can use up to 16gb (8gb X 2) of DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Ram. Some DDR3 1600 can work as well, but not always. Make sure you do a little checking before buying. That is one of the easiest HP laptops for replacing ram. Depending on where you get it, a full 16gb kit will run around $40 online. I would recommend checking to see what you have already installed and it you are lucky, it will be a single 8gb module and you would just need a second one. It can be done in under a minute and there are lots of videos on youtube on how to do it

Note that switching to an SSD (solid-state drive) is more complex and you need to move all of your files to the new drive, and probably re-install your OS on the new drive as well...

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.

Patriot is a good brand. I saw the 1600 as supported on your 6460b, but it may be limited to newer models. To be safe, find instructions for replacing the memory. Remove the access panel and check the label of you current SODIMMS. If the current SODIMMS are 1600s, then 1600s will work. If they are 1333s, can't guarantee it. You'll need to verify the exact sub-model.

If you want to upgrade to an SSD, here is a good article on how to do it (assuming that you are running Windows 10).

If you are not running Windows 10, i'm sure that you can find similar articles for the version of Windows that you are running.

It's 1333 (PC 10600). I have found what appears to be a match, but the photo looks like a longer card than the ones I have:

You are right. It doesn't look right, because it isn't. That is a regular DIMM. Typically used in full sized systems. The first chip you posted is a SODIMM. That is what you need.

I am a little torn on the advise to give you. I went looking for 8GB, DDR3 1333 SODIMMs and they are few a far between. I see a lot of 1600s. However, the HP docs:
                http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03253774.pdf
say only 1333s. I see a lot of 3rd party manufacturers saying that their 1600s will work.

                So...
If you buy 1600s, buy them from someone with a good return policy.

If google translate is working correctly, that looks good.

ETA: G.Skill is a pretty good brand.
