I've been debating for a while whether this should go here or in sightings, but I figure since it's techie stuff, it can go here.
Ok, little background on my job. I work at a university doing software support (along with some troubleshooting of hardware and networking problems, but I usually don't get to fix those.) I've been here for 2.5 years, just finished my degrees, and am nearly done with my job
(I love the job, but it's a student position, and I'm not a student anymore.) Some of the different departments have their own techs, but my office handles the majority of the campus. This tech, however, works for a different department. Granted, we don't get many calls for that department since they have their own techs, and so this particular tech may not have seen me before. Anywho...
So I get a call, mid-week, from the department's admin assistant. She'd called before having problems with Eudora (may that program quickly fade out of existence!!!) and one of the techs from my department had switched her to Thunderbird. Well, like half this campus, she didn't like the change and wanted to switch back. Fair enough. So I go over there to help her switch back. BUT the problem continues... the program is taking forever to download new messages. So I log into the web client, start moving messages around so Eudora is downloading fewer messages at a time, and then Eudora throws me an error saying the password is incorrect.
I quickly surmise that because the network is running so slowly on her computer for whatever reason that when Eudora sends the login information to our mail server, Eudora considers it timed out since the server doesn't respond quickly enough, and then Eudora (I really want to smack their programmers sometimes) responds with the message saying the password is incorrect. Root of problem discovered. Now to find the cause. I explain this to the admin assistant, but she doesn't understand (fair enough) and rather than leave me alone to deal with it, she decides to go get her tech. I really wish she hadn't.
Me: becoming increasingly
T: Department tech
AA: Admin assistant
I explain the problem to T, and AA goes off and does whatever she's doing. T sits down and looks at the computer. I explain that I had already checked network traffic, nothing unusual except the fact that it's really low. No strange processes running, no unusual processor speeds, nothing strange at all. He asks what the site is to check bandwidth. I have no idea as I've never used it myself, but I know what he's talking about. He walks back to his office to get the addy, and I ask him to bring back a new networking cord. He says he doesn't think that's what the problem is, but he'll bring one anyway. He comes back and sits down. I ask him for the cord so we can test it.
T: I really don't think that's what the problem is.
Me: Neither do I, but if we call the networking team and haven't tested everything on our end, they'll yell at us.
T: I don't even know where this plugs in.
Me: It plugs into this switch right here over my shoulder.
T: *as we are talking, loads up our school site, then loads google, then closes the browser and reopens it. Hey look! The school's site, set as the homepage, loads nice and fast this time! ZOMG!* See, it's not the networking cable because this cached page loaded faster than this uncached page. *as he browses to another page*
Me:
*does he think I'm an idiot? or is he the idiot? I choose the latter and keep my mouth shut.*
T: You probably haven't been around long enough to know this, but we've been having problems with our network up here.
Me:

*he did not just say that to me. OMG, if I open my mouth to talk to him, it's not going to be pretty. Keeping mouth shut still, and sending him death glares with my eyes.*
T: *continues rambling on, decides to let me finish what I was doing as he is going to take over for the networking problem, and leaves to go call the team.*
I show AA how to view her emails through the webclient for now, and tell her she can still use Eudora, but not to put in her password until the network problem has been fixed. Meanwhile, T comes back in and when AA asks me a question, starts talking OVER ME and telling her EXACTLY what I am. I'm so close to blowing up on this guy that I can't even talk to him to thank him and tell him I don't need him there, because it's going to come out as 'STFU, I've got it from here. Go away.' I figure I can't even manage to say 'Thank you. You can leave now.' politely enough to get him out, so I continue answering AA's questions and ignore him as best as I can. He finally shuts up and lets me finish, and I leave. So I'm done, right? Oh how I wish.
Two days later, I get a call from AA asking on the status of the problem. I tell her I have no idea as T had been taking care of it, and she says she'll go call T's boss (who is a really nice guy) and have him call me. A few minutes later, who calls but T. I ask him what the status is, he basically tells me that he thought it had been fixed. Then he asks me to put an admin account on AA's computer for his boss. One of the things I had done while I was there was open up the accounts and look at them (although I don't recall why, but I did). So...
Me: He has an account on there.
T: No he doesn't.
Me: Yes, he does. When I was there the other day, I saw the account there.
T: There's no account.
Me: Is there no admin privileges on the account, or has he never logged in?
T: No, there is no account.
Me:
*not being so nice today as there is no customer to complain!* Yes. There is. I was there the other day, and I saw it with my own eyes. The account is there.
T: Well, he didn't know about it.
Me: *thinking of all the long, slow, torturous deaths possible* The account is there. The username is blah. Try blabbity for the password. If that doesn't work, we can come over there and reset it, but. the. account. is. there.
T: Uh, alright. Bye.
Me: Bye.
*starts cursing up a storm enough to make a sailor go
*
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
All that can keep me sane is thinking that by next Friday, I'm outta here and won't have to deal with him again! Then again, I may. Kharma has been rather cruel to me lately, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see him show up at whatever job I obtain.
