  • Fun with screensavers

So once upon a time, while I was still in highschool, I used to work for my mom's retail business. She had two partners, one of which used to work for a technology company and even had a degree in engineering...

I can't remember whether it was Windows 95 or 98, but one of the two (or maybe both) had a screensaver that was just a bunch of multicolored lines running around randomly. One of the options you could set was whether or not it would clear the screen when the screensaver started, or just start doing the lines over the regular desktop...

Well, I was just screwing around with the company computer... and I changed the setting not to clear the screen. No biggie, right? No other harm done?

Apparently not. Both my mom and her partner with the engineering degree spent HOURS trying to troubleshoot the problem with the screensaver. It drove them nuts.

Kinda like the professor who called today because his Weather Bug wasn't starting up.

We had fun with that one.

      I still like that classic:

      - Take screen capture of person desktop.
      - Set it as tyheir wallpaper
      - Remove ALL icons from the screen, and hide the START the bar.
      - Watch them try to use their desktop.

I usually delete the Weatherbug when I see it. Big piece of crap.

I like to set the text colour in Word to white.

Oh that reminds me of what I did to my mom once.

She doesn't know ANYTHING about computers. She just uses hers for email (rarely...), and to play cards online.

So once when she wasn't home, I went in and setup her computer for remote access. Waited until she got home from work and sat down to go online. Then I accessed her computer, opened Notepad and started typing messages to her. lol

i did something like that at work once
we had software that reported if computer services were up or down,... i took a screenshot and colored it in so everything looked like it was down.

then i set it as the background

                  they freaked out at first

But so fun. We did that to someone I worked with when I did tech support. They couldn't figure it out.

In the days when us programmers used to type our own punchcards for amendments to the programs, and when the punchcard machine keyboards were like typewriters with plastic cubes stuck on the end of metal prongs, we just pulled the A and the S cubes off the end of the prongs and switched their positions. Then we always made sure that someone else was using the only other punchcard machine whenever Keith was creating an amendment card pack. After nearly a week of all his compiles failing to work, we gave in and told him what we had done.

My A+ instructor has a screensaver on his machine that emulates a Windows XP Blue screen and reboot over and over again.

I came up to talk to him last week and saw it.

"Um... that's not a good sign..."

Oh man, I can't find it now.

There was a web page you could go to that through up an animated gif that made it look like it completely uninstalled windows from your computer and then installed Mac in it's place.
