This might be my last story from my work as a tech for a while. The majority of the others are dealing with idiot co-irkers, managers, and the dreaded phone support. But anyway...
There was a guy who brought us his system for repair. It was a standard custom built PC clone. Could've been built by us, I don't remember. All I do remember is this was something that came in for one thing, and was found to have a whole lot more.
The system was brought in because it wouldn't complete POST. No BIOS beeps, just wouldn't POST. We determined that the CPU was bad and after replacing it with one of our test processors, the system came to life. From there, we ran our normal diagnostics and found an endless list of viral infections. As policy, we shut down the system and called the customer. Once a virus is found, we wouldnt' go any further until we authorization to clean them off, as there was a charge for it. The customer doesn't believe the infection and doesn't authorize the cleaning.
He comes in a few days later and we show him that his system works with our CPU and not his and then show him the infections found. We start talking quotes again about how much everything will cost with the new processor and everything else. At this point, he had only paid $49.95 for a diagnostic on his system.
This is when he gets mad.
He starts going off about how we're trying to rip him off and basically accuses us of infecting his system with the viruses. When it looked like we're not going to get any further with this, one of our techs shut down and disconnected everything from his system and swapped the CPUs out again, allowing him to take his system and go home.
The SC picked up his computer, lifted it up above his head, and slammed it down to the ground like he was King Kong.
Our LP people came runnign over and after we told them what happened, they quickly escorted him out of the store.
We had LP make a copy of it from the surveillance footage and it became a popular tape to use when we had any kind of VCR service to do.
