She wanted to listen to music so she downloaded Limewire. I explained the concept of internet radio. For some reason, a majority of our faculty and staff seem to think that we think internet radio is worse than malware filled, and not to mention ILLEGAL, P2Ps. I don't get it. I have a LOT of education to do here.
I got one little bit of revenge.. I didn't back up her Limewire download folder. Then..., I informed our network admin that limewire isn't being blocked. And, from the email he sent me back, I don't think he's worried about blocking it. Although, he did send me the list of programs that ARE blocked. If I wasn't, you know, ME, I could make quite a bit of money selling this list to students....... ..... .......
(The Technical.Angel is joking, and does not condone any act designed to cicumvent security measures on a network that you do not personally manage. Just because you don't like the rules doesn't mean they don't have a reason.)

P2Ps are still not illegal. And it's illegal for them to advertise in a manner that would suggest piracy. It's illegal for users to offer or download copyrighted material they do not already own.
Either way, I have no more capacity to be shocked by the utter ignorance displayed by otherwise intelligent and competent people when they get put in front of a computer. It's like they're so intimidated or overwhelmed by the potentiality of the equipment in front of them and just can't get around it to actually learn enough to know what the hell they need to do and not do.

Very true.
I was in a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) roundtable at the conference I attended last week. According to the presenter, as of now, you can legally download anything from torrents. Since you're only getting tiny segments from many different people, it falls under fair use.
I'd go further into this, but as copyright's a federal thing, I'm not.

Yes, let's not get into the DMCA ... what a utter piece of protectionist trash. HP cited it to try to stop other companies from making compatible ink carts.

I HATE the DMCA, it's basically there to so companies can have free reign to say "you can't do this, you can't do that" with the things you already own, and also to stifle competition. Lexmark tried to pull the same crap with a generic manufacturer.
And the DMCA is responsible for causing the eradication of one of the best softwares ever created: DVD X Copy.
Personally, this isn't even something I'd dare discuss in Fratching. I can see trouble in discussing it on any forum.... but I'm in Education, so we're one of their favorite targets.
Just think of this as a little warning.
