  • Why won't you listen??

So my boss had a laptop at home that she was using at night and on the weekends (she vpn's into the office and gets work done). She decides that an employee who is going on maternity leave early (a month earlier than expected and very sudden) should be able to work from home if she wants and has me clean up the laptop of personal affects and set up a new profile.

    Last Thursday
Me: So do you want me to order you a new laptop? I saw some that are good deals.
Boss: No, it's okay maybe if business picks up a little more. I can wait until October or so.
Me: Okay but let me know if you change your mind so that I can order one with XP (our database doesn't work in vista)

    Fast forward to this Monday
Boss: So I bought a laptop this weekend when I was out. I need you to set it up for me...
Me Okay...where did you get it? What does it have?
Boss: I dunno it was a good deal though, it was only about $800.
Me: The laptop I was going to order for you was only $500...Well did you bring it in?
    Boss: I'll bring it tomorrow.

So now I'm looking at a shiny laptop running vista that I now have to install over before I can do anything that has a slower processor than the one I was looking at. Why don't they listen?

Because they know better. After all, you're just a lowly tech support person, and they're the boss. They wouldn't be the boss if they didn't know better, would they?

    (Why, me, sarcastic?)

She admitted I was right, and that she should have known she'd want to be able to work...but I doubt she'll actually learn from the experiences.

The really sucky part is that that I'm gone for a week to Kenya starting this Saturday, so I'm already trying to do 2 weeks of stuff in one week and now I have another project.

Next time I'm just going to order the extra computer and deal with the consequences of being over prepared instead of under.

You mean being labeled psychic, with all it's attendant headaches?
Any day you're looking down at the dirt instead of up at the dirt is a good day.

No being told "Oh we really don't need a new computer" because Mr. Murphy likes to remind me whose laws apply at my office

Instead of vpn into the office and using her laptop, why not vpn and RDP to her desktop? That's what I do. I have Vista(ugh) on my home computer, our network is XP - but once I have a VPN tunnel open, I then RDP to my desktop and work on that - in XP!

RDP (program name: MSTSC) is available in all versions of Vista, and all you need is VPN access, which you said she has. Give that a try, it may be easier on you in the long run!
