    17. Thats right. SEVENTEEN FRICKING MINUTES to explain the difference between "Yes", "Yes to all" and "No" on a dialouge box asking, get this, if they want to over-write the destination file with the source file of the same name.

6 or so times alone i had to explain "Clicking "Yes to all", will replace the files on the right, with the files on the left."

Its like they see a message pop-up and their though processes crash. Never mind reading the fricking thing, just panic, flail in terror, then cause your IT to contemplate becoming a hermit.

I'm speechless. See my sig for further comments.

The really bad users are barely functional. They know -just- enough to do their day to day jobs. Learning a new function is impossible for these hidebound individuals. A dialogue box they have never experienced leaves them in sheer terror at the thought of actually having to think, much less make a decision. Computers are magical black boxes to these users, worthy of nothing but fear and hatred.

        *sigh*

This is why I got out of tech support. More of these sorts of users than the normal semi-educated, knows enough to stay out of my way types.

I'm going to go drown my brain and try to forget I read this...I have to maintain my belief in humanity just a little longer...until I can get my house in the woods...

While that is in the Pern series, I've heard it in other contexts.

Oh? I'm trying to remember if I've heard it elsewhere, but no luck.

Then again, given the number of books I've read, and that most of my friends are geeks, it's entirely possible I've heard or read it and not realized.

Actually, I meant I'd heard it just from people saying it to describe a narrow-minded individual. "Hidebound" is even in the dictionary.

                Ah, ok.

Very interesting. Thank you, I didn't know it was actually considered a "real word."

A-fricken-greed. I swear, 25% of the SC-helping that I do each day has nothing to do with actual technical issues, but the lack of basic sentence comprehension.

For example, if a customer tries to leave our site, they get one of those lovely pop-up that says something like, "are you sure you want to exit? press 'OK' to continue and exit, and press 'cancel' to stay on the current page".

You would not believe how many SC's completely freak out about this! "It won't let me leave your site!"... a common cry of desperation. Um, noooo, you're just an idiot! Maybe if you would just take about 10 seconds to actually READ your choices, you wouldn't be in this predicament. Argh.

Those pop-ups totally suck. I always suspect they're trying to do something nasty to my computer and I do a crtl-alt-del to shut down my browser. Why should I have to verify that I want to leave a web site?

The only times I feel it's legit are when you're filling out a form, or in a secured site area. If you're filling out a form, you probably want to be sure you're navigating away, instead of by accident. And if it's a secure site, if something's trying to jack your browser, it's a bit more of a concern (say, if you've got a spam email or something). Otherwise, it's a bit of a dick move by the web designer.
