DH works in MIS at the local utility company, specifically his job title is Database Admin, but his duties encompase more than just the billing database, although that is his primary function.
This week he is the only one in his dept (of 3, including his supvisor, BC--it's a small co) working.
Monday morning, DH gets call from one of the big-shots (BS) in upper mgmt. BS's computer is not working, does not boot. BS cannot do his job w/o a working computer.
DH asks routine questions and learns that BS had reported this issue to MIS last week and that BC had handled it.
DH checks on the established work order and learns that the BS's computer was apparently dead and that a replacement had been ordered. Since the replacement process could take up to a couple weeks, a loaner computer is usually set up for the user until the replacement is availble, but BC had not issued a loaner to BS yet.
DH then proceeded to get a loaner computer for BS. Unfortunately, none of the loaners were ready to go out as is, so DH had to do about an hour's worth of work on it (not sure what exactly).
DH then drives the 20 minutes out to BS's office (which is at a different facility than HQ, where DH's office is) only to find BS happily working away using his company-issued laptop.
DH: I've brought you a loaner computer to use until your new one arrives.
BS: Oh, I don't need one. I'm leaving shortly for vacation and I'll be gone for 2 weeks. I just needed to pop in for a few minutes and my lap-top is fine for what I need to do before I go. BC said the new computer will be in and ready before I get back.
DH: Um, okay.
DH then gets to drive 20 minutes back to his office, now having wasted about 2 hours of his day on something that didn't need to be done.
Not sure why BS made the call to DH in the first place, especially since BC, not DH, is the one in charge of issuing and replacing computers and he'd already ordered a new computer and BS knew that.
