  • Removing the liquid indicators

It seems like one thing people just love to do to try and keep me from finding liquid damage in their phones is removing the liquid indicators from the batteries or the battery compartments. Yes... that will fool me for sure.

I've had to tell customers all the time that the only reason I was really suspicious about their phone is because the indicators were tampered with. If they'd just left them alone, I probably would have let some of them slide. I also have people removing indicators that aren't even set off all the time.

Background: A phone comes to the tech room with an intermittently white screen. It was in pretty good condition, so I thought I'd just give it a quick once over to decide whether I needed to open it up to check it before exchanging it. When I took the battery out, both the liquid indicators on the battery and back housing had been removed. Obviously red flags went up, so I opened it to find a considerable amount of liquid damage.

    CS = Customer
    Me = Me

Me: Ma'am, it seems that at some point this phone was exposed to some sort of liquid that has caused considerable damage to your phone. [I show the customer the liquid still physically present inside the housing].
    CS: What does that mean?
Me: Well it means that I'll need to refer you to the insurance company for a replacement.
    CS: Why?
Me: Because the phone is wet, once it's wet there isn't anything I can do for it and we'll need to get it replaced through insurance.
CS: It's not wet. I want to see the little on the battery that say whether it got wet.
Me: Well that's another point. The stickers have been tampered with and are removed. But, I don't need them when I've got water still dripping around inside the phone.
CS: You can't prove it without the stickers.
Me: Actually, I can. I'll get this back together for you and get you the phone number for insurance.

[I throw the phone back together and get the business card for the insurance provider. I head back out to see the customer off.]

CS: I'm going to be calling your corporate office. You can't say its wet without the stickers.
Me: You're welcome to do what you feel you need to ma'am. I went ahead and noted it appears that the phone was tampered with and the indicators were missing. Just for reference, tampering with those indicators by itself is enough for me to void your phone and send you to insurance. You have a wonderful day.

Yep, the wireless company I work for considers the warranty to automatically be voided if those liquid damage indicators are missing... not to mention the fact that several phones out there will have them inside of the casing in addition to the ones the customer can see.

Always nice to have those as a backup.

When did cell phones start having these liquid indicators? I never heard of these before.

They've had them for at least 8 years or so. They're little white dots inside your phone's battery compartment. On my phone they're on the battery. On my last phone they were on both compartment and battery. As of late, customers have started realizing how phone techs know they've gotten the phone wet, so have started tampering with them. Some customers just aren't bright, and tell the phone tech, "I dropped it in the toilet, but it wasn't even submerged for 5 seconds!", who puts a note on the account that pops up by any internal tech accessing the account, so it doesn't matter what the dot says...ahem.

I knew they were there, somewhere. I almost opened up my phone to look, but my G1 is a bit difficult to open so I didn't.

Hard to open?? Unless you have a specialty case.. um... k.

I saw something that MIGHT be a indicator on my G1, as it was a black dot that said void, but I could be wrong.

Instead of sliding open, it snaps on and off. I was just being really lazy.

When I had to open it last time, I was afraid I would break the back.

I get people who do something similar all the time.

On the products is a seal. The seal says WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED.

This is to prevent people from opening up the unit and attempting to "repair" it which invariably results in it being completely destroyed. This is standard practice really. If you open up any electronic product you void your warranty.

People break this seal time and time again, then cause a huge stink when we inform them that their product no longer has a warranty. They claim they didn't know or weren't informed.

I simply point out that on the seal it says WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED.

Remove the seal, warranty is void. Simple as that. End the call.

I had to replace an ATX power supply a couple years ago. I decided to open the box in the store and check it out before leaving the register, and I'm glad I did, because that "Void If Removed" sticker was torn. I told them I wanted a different one. They said it wasn't a problem. I told them that if I ever needed it to be replaced on warranty, it would be a problem then. They agreed with me and got me another one.

(And it did turn out to need replacement under warranty. I dunno what exactly happened, but at some point I hit the power button on my case, the power meter LEDs on the UPS went right up to the top for a half second, then the power supply said "Phut!" and the magic smoke came out of its can, along with a nice blue flame for a moment. Once you smell magic smoke (a.k.a. burnt capacitor), you'll never forget what it smells like.)

Unless all electronics manufacturers use the exact same indicators, those actually have fairly limited value.

I've never tried to game the system, so, i have no clue, but, i would imagine that they would vary between manufacturers.

Please don't tell me they stopped putting the stickers on the INSIDE of the phone?

                          Those were the best.

There is no sticker so you have no proof!

(I open up the phone - show the internal ones). How about these?

                          Those don't count! I couldn't see those!
