  • Microsoft Security problem?

I can't open Microsoft Security. I get a window that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

    Help?

Sounds like your account does not have admin privileges. What version of Windows are you running and how are the users setup?

      Windows 7 Home Premium.

I don't have any 'accounts' for using this computer... but if I check for "Groups or User Names" there's SYSTEM, me (listed onscreen as me-PC), and Administrators.

Try "right click" - "Run as administrator"

          Tried, doesn't work.

I know that the icon I'm clicking on is a shortcut, so I went to where the file is (msseces.exe) and tried to 'run as Administrator' from there and get a message:

"The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again."

EDIT: another thing I noticed... in the file there's little padlocks on the icons for everything. I checked the Microsoft Security file at work today and there isn't. So, whatever did this locked my MS down so that I can't access it. I tried unlocking the file by itself and the whole folder and get the message "path does not exist" or "need administrator to run".

I have gotten padlocks before, but only after I added a user and deleted the old one (both Admins, but some folders are still restricted even if the old user no longer exists)..

Could also be an antivirus conflict. The file you mentioned is MS Security Essentials, which is not actually needed to run the computer.

Now this is starting to irritate me... I can't download a .pdf file that I sent myself from work, because it says there's a virus in it... and there shouldn't be, because I know the source. I think there's a problem with the Microsoft Security but I can't do a damn thing about it.

                  Where can I find ccleaner?

I'm also assuming I'll have to download it on another computer, then bring the files over to mine with a USB drive, right?

You can't get it on the cputer you're on now? Can't install anything?
I'd download it somehow, safe mode install and update

Can't download it. My computer says that there's a virus in the file and deletes it.

I know, I'll have to download it on another computer, save it to a USB drive and then run it on my computer (in Safe Mode).

                        yup
The ccleaner only does temp files/cookies a bit of regsister cleaning. You need anti-malwarebites.
                        http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
                        CCleaner.
Another free antivirus AVG is a good one
Load all of those on USB stick.
                        Safe mode with networkign.
                        Install those and update files
unplug the ethernet cable (instead of digging around to turn network off..just yank it)
                        uninstall mse
                        run ccleaner and antimalware bites
                        install the avg
                        reboot
                        see how it goes
