  • Nintendo Wii problem (and rant)

Today my brother decided to free up some space on our Wii by deleting some virtual console games. Okay, fine. The Wii still works perfectly, but since he deleted those games, the screen flickers colours for a second when we turn it off. My brother panicked and was terrified that he damaged the Wii somehow and was freaking out, crying and apologizing. I promised him I'd go on a message board and ask about it (my brother has a phobia of most message boards and chatrooms).
So I went on Gamefaqs and posted the problem under Wii hardware and asked for help. I got a reply from somebody who said "first of all, your brother didn't damage the Wii, you did. Own up to your actions." What the hell?
For some reason this really made me mad and I'm still pissed. Why would I lie to people on the internet? I don't care what they think, I don't even know them. The fact that they're lecturing me like they think they know me really infuriates me. I replied telling him as much.
Anyway, the guy said my GPU is fried and I should check with Nintendo services. I'm not sure I should listen to this guy who is obviously an idiot, so does anybody have any advice? Is he right? Because the flickering is the only problem we have and my brother just told me it seems to be getting smaller.
    Thanks for listening!

I'd ask again ... and, reply to the guy and let him know it was your brother and that he's being a general dipshit asshole.

My siblings damage my things all the time, especially the younger ones who don't have as much common sense about electronics. That guy was not only rude, but also stupid/ignorant. I'm not sure I'd take advice from someone who had never seen a 3rd party damage something. I know nothing about Wiis, though, so I am unable to help with your primary problem.

Thanks so much. I don't really think it's a big problem with the wii, but my brother is pretty obsessive and panics easily. I feel a lot better, especially when you guys called him rude and a dipshit asshole. Peace!

Does it *only* do it when you turn it off? If so, then it's probably nothing large, at least currently. Just deleting VC games shouldn't be able to damage it, so the two things are likely unconnected. First thing is check and see if there's a system update available, and get that downloaded/installed. After that, see if it still happens. If yes, email Nintendo, just in case, and do mention that VC games were just deleted, as it might be a memory management bug that they've not run across yet that somehow affected the system files. Hope that helps.

See, the problem here is it really doesn't matter whether you, your brother, or freakin' Big Foot did it. That kind of commentary was absolutely unnecessary. This isn't freakin' CSI here...you're just trying to figure out what's wrong and get some advice. I don't personally own a Wii, but yeah, I'd lay into Captain Dickhead if he tried saying some BS to me like that as well. What a cocklump.

              To start off with:

              a) GameFAQS has hit the crapper since they got bought by Gamespot. It used to be a good place for info, but now it's just a pack of whiners who act like the ones on XBox Live.

              b) Most of the stuff in there at the very least was custom made for Nintendo specifically, so contacting their tech support is the best bet.

Can't remember details so feel free to ignore me..

Does the Wii have a "Reset to factory settings" options? If so grab a smart memory card and back up all your downloaded stuff and save games first then run the reset.

If you contact Nintendo, and this option is there, I'd be surprised if they didn't ask you to do it as part of their diagnostics.

All the VC stuff once bought is re-downloadable at no charge.

My wii had an annoying "static" that would show up every once in a while. After an update, it went away. It showed up after I bought an VC game too. So it's entirely possible that there are a few minor "glitches" that sneak in.

However, I would report it to nintendo anyway. So at least you can say you've reported this problem (while hopefully it's still under warranty)
I've lost my mind ages ago. If you find it, please hide it.
