  • Knowing when to ask...

Right, well...normally I wouldn't ask this sort of question. I'd rather really just figure it out myself, but, well...yeah, I'm still kinda stumped. A little background. I've had my Windows XP machine for...4 years, maybe? Anyway, I've never opened it that entire time. Not once. And now that I know how and what I'm doing, I haven't purchased the proper tools to do so (everything I have currently is magnetized).

Therefore, I haven't been able to take apart the computer to take a look at this, but here goes. I rarely turn off my computer. Lately I've been turning it off. Well, about a week ago, I go to turn on the tower...and the button doesn't respond. Now, by respond, I mean it didn't light up, the power supply didn't turn on. I look at the back of the machine...everything's nice and tight. I press again and it seems to turn on...but the activity light stays on.

Now, I don't hear any beeps or anything to indicate a problem in the POST, yet I do hear the power supply turn on. Why's this relevant? I hit the monitor button and it acts like it's in standby mode. In other words, it's not detecting the tower as being on. This has happened off and on this last week. Eventually I get it working, but almost every time I have to go in the back, wiggle the connections, hit the tower button then the monitor button, and hope for the best.

It's very trial and error. Given that, I'm compelled to believe either there's something loose internally or the power supply is going bad. Before I do anything else, what would you guys recommend? What does it sound like to you? I should be getting my taxes back soon...but it won't be enough to get a whole new machine.

First instinct is the power switch is, to use the technical term, buggered.

That's certainly a possibility, but what I want to know is why the activity light comes on and the monitor won't when that occurs. That's why I'm thinking there's something more serious afoot. In any case, I still need to get some basic tools to take it apart and see if there's any obvious damage, but yeah.

Since you mentioned that you rarely turn the system off, you may want to double-check the power supply. Four years is a pretty good run.

Get a voltmeter and disconnect large power connector from motherboard.
Have computer open, and yourself grounded.

Press on button for computer, see if pwer is transferring from PSU to the big plug.

When you turn it on, do the fans run? Just the PSU fans?

            Bad power supply.

            Fixed it.

Nuff said. Proud of myself, sure, but not fun because of HP's crappy interior design.
