  • AVG vs. Avast!

Okay, both AVG and Avast! have come highly recommended from multiple sources, and nobody has had a bad word about the performance of either after having used them, but is one noticeably better than the other? If you have Avast! (as I do), is it worth switching to AVG, or vice versa? On top of that, is the paid-for AVG really any better than the free?

And for a bonus, would anyone say 'screw it' and spring for Nod32 or Kasperky over either of them if they had the spare money laying around? If so, which one.

I don't think it really is. AVG is designed for businesses with a lot of computers. The free version is pretty much the same exact program, except built as a "trial" for people to try out at home before installing it at their place of business, just to see if the program will do what they want.

The free version is updated -all the freakin time-. I am have one (very) minor problem with it right now, but it's really easy to work around, and doesn't affect the program. (Sometimes the updater fails to update... not the virus definitions mind you, those work fine, it's just the updater software itself fails after it has downloaded and installed an update.)

If what you have, does the job, then there is no need to switch...
      AVG just is free...

That's my theory as well . . . my Avast! works fine and dandy and I can use it on any version of Windows with no issues.

Why fix it if it ain't broke?

As for the question about purchasing anti-virus software - I wouldn't. I've bought software before . . . earlier version of Norton were pretty decent, McAffee was harder to set up and use and the very first one (a program called Guard Dog which I had on my Win95 PC) was pretty basic compared to the latest version of Norton.

Later versions of Norton (starting with the Internet Security suite that came pre-installed two laptops ago) started creating issues with the firewall. It was even worse on this laptop, both Norton and Windows firewall were basically in a pissing match over which was going to run the firewall.

Which is when one simply disables and uninstalls Norton for it is evil, download a copy of Avast (or AVG if that's your preference) and all is right with the world

I use both. And honestly, I do not use the paid ones. The free ones both work with fine. Like was said. AVG updates all the fucking time. Just which ever you prefer.

I've had both AVG and Avast! on my machines but currently use only Avast!. (And Comodo's firewall.) I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I lean toward Avast!. I seem to have to pay less attention to it. Or maybe it's just the piratey name. I use the free versions.

Well, speaking as a new owner of the free version of AVG, so far I love it. I would love to be able to control when it does a system scan (so far I haven't figured out how to set it for when I'm asleep instead of right when I'm at my busiest on the computer) other than that, I'm as happy as a clam. I never used Avast. I was a happy Norton user right up until my computer crashed night before last. As it turns out, the error message that was associated with the crash was due to a fault in the Norton. It let through a virus that affects Norton. Or so the tech told me.

Anyway. I go along with the masses here. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The problem with anti-virus software is that you don't know it's broke until it needs fixing.

Open up control centre (double click the systray icon), click once on scheduler, then scheduled tasks, click on the scheduled scan, and then edit scan.

                  AVG WINS

I used both avast and avg, after using them both I liked that you don't have to register avg. I also use handycafe and some times avast kills the internet with the handycafe firewall. AVG WINS
