But this is REALLY cheesing me off...Dell tech...have been fighting with them over a small problem with my computer...they are trying to say its my fault...can someone either set me straight or help me out?

here is the problem...

I just reformatted my computer yesterday, today (I did it just before I went to bed) I tried to install the drivers so that I can have wonderful things like sound...and watch DVD's on my computer, its saying my computer is not a dell computer and the drivers are only compatiable with Dell computers. Dell tech support is saying that because I had my speakers, and microphone attached to my computer, that it caused the operating system to install incorrectly.

I say its a crock of something....but tell me I'm wrong. and if I am...what should I do Tech support is not being very helpful...when I can understand them ><

Moved this to tech help, as someone might be able to solve the problem, in addition to giving advice. IMO though, "Having speakers and a microphone plugged in corrupted the install"? Uh, maybe if they were USB speakers (don't ask how that would work, I dunno). But just having them plugged in properly, it's not like they have software *in* them to install.

ugh ><!!!!!!

follow up to first post >< THIS is what they are now asking me to do...

1:24:05 PM Dell: We will need a floppy Drive As we have to create Some Bootable Floppies to boot your System .
1:24:30 PM ME: wtf...no one uses floppies any more
1:25:35 PM Dell: We need it any ways that's is the basic need for the resolution We have to mount your Service tag Manually.
1:26:42 PM ME: so you mean to tell me that I have to use a obsolulete form of data transfer, to reset my computer when my computer does not even have floppy drive?

FIRST they tell me I have to reformat my computer again and thats the ONLY way to fix, THEN they tell me the "perfect solution" would be to spend tons of money I don't have on an obsolete...I KNOW I'm probably turning myself into an SC over this entire converstation I've been having with the support person....but I' ve been arguing over this fact with them for OVER an hour when instead I could be sitting poolside with my mother!

If your computer doesn't have a floppy drive, they need to come up with a different solution. It's unreasonable for tech support to demand that. Especially for something you'd likely use only the once. Heck, I didn't know my last computer even *had* a floppy drive until I was taking it apart to give it away, and noticed it tucked under the overhang of the front panel. And I had it for THREE YEARS. That's how much I used floppies.

Though it probably wouldn't be tons of money. You could probably get a floppy drive for around $40, maybe less. Still, unreasonable.

Sounds like some kind of unique identifier on your system got scrambled and they need to reset it. You can get external floppy drives for pretty cheap. They come in handy occasionally too .

I've been floppy-free for over a year now.

Yeah what he said.

Get a usb- floppy drive. Around $10 bucks. You can sell it afterwards, if you need to.

But - in the mean time, ask if you can have the data on a usb-stick and see if that will work. Set the bios to accept usb sticks as boot drives? Depends on the bios -and the year of it.

You may HAVE to have a floppy for now. I always install one on puters I make, even tho we barely use them. Just for this darn reason.

My angry side is coming out lately. Let's start with a long grrrrr at the Dell techs.

If they are telling you you need a floppy drive to reset this, they are probably going to reflash the BIOS. This also likely means they're going to have you boot from the floppy drive. Depending on the age of the machine, you may or may not be able to boot from a USB floppy.

So, grr at them again.

Here's a method that might work for you, but no promises. If you have a separate computer, go to Dell.com on that computer, find their support page. Plug in the service tag from your computer, and download all the drivers it lists. Expand the files, and burn the expanded files to disk. Take *that* disk over to the non-working machine.

Now comes the fun part: Open up device manager (right-click My Computer, click Properties, Hardware (I think), Device Manager). For every device that has a yellow question mark, double-click it, go to the driver page, and click on 'driver', then install or reinstall or update, whichever. Point the ensuing dialog boxes at your burned cd, and go to town.

Since you're doing this because a dell tech can't figure out what you mean when you say "I have no floppy drive on this machine", grrrr in the general direction of Dell tech support on each mouse click.

That does sound like something they warn about in ED pill commercials. You might want to call your doctor.

It was there. I had to say it. Even though Sheldonrs got there first.

since the problem had been fixed, i'll just throw out an FYI....

Anytime a motherboard is replaced with dell, they send out a CD DISC to set the service tag in the BIOS. (i have one, but it's for latitude d600s) So you don't NEED to boot to a floppy disk on a dell machine, therefore i think it was sucky on the dell rep's part for saying you need a floppy disk drive.
