  • Power Surge + Monitor = ?

On friday we lost power, at the time my computer was on and i was in the other room on my parents computer. When the power went out the was a loud pop in that room (I think I was a power surge in the surge protector as thats was where the noise came from) My dad was downstairs watching tv (different end of the house) and also heard a pop. So after not using the computer on saturday, it was off all day due to storms and on-off power. I turn it on and the monitor seems weird. Almost more pixalated. Is this actually something that could be caused by the storm?

    Sorry this is so long.

    1. That's not long
    2. I'm no comp tech, but I do CCTV.. yeah.. it happens.

If you have another monitor, plug that one in and test it. If the problem persists, it's the video card. If you don't have another monitor, I'd suggest loading the comp and the monitor into the car and bringing it down to a repair center. The only reason is to save you a trip. Most likely the monitor is FUBAR. You might have lost the card as well. Me, I'd pay the $35 evaluation fee, and have it checked out.

(actually I'd just buy another monitor and return it for a videocard if it didn't work, but gas is expensive if you don't have a company gas card!)

probably blew a few capacitors in the monitor (hopefully not on the video card or worst the motherboard).

Depending on the power surge you had the monitor attached to. The good ones have a warranty against strikes like that. But I'm willing to bet, the power surge didn't do it's job.

damn. i was hoping i was imagining things. The surge protector is a battery back-up that's been broken for a month or so. I finally got around to switching everything to the new one after the storm.

Well, check the manufacture of that UPS. Even if the battery died, the surge protections should have still continued to work. So you might get a replacement for the monitor. Some of em, even the cheap ones, have 5+ years warranties.
