  • Video Card Driver Baloney

Hey guys, I just upgraded my video card. My computer came with an NVidia GeForce 6100 built in (as in, I can't remove it), and I installed an ATI Asus 4650 in the available PCIe slot. I'll admit, the only reason I did this was so that The Sims 3 could run without barfing all over itself. So I install the drivers from the provided CD, and it all hums along fine until it hits some ATI Parental Control install thing, whereupon it freezes up completely (the disc in the computer stops spinning) and I have to ctrl-alt-del to get out of it, whereupon the program informs me that the install wasn't complete.

I've tried to do this four times now, and every time I get the same result. I can't find any way to disable the parental controls, or change the install so that it doesn't include them. Any thoughts? Also, I tried to uninstall said drivers so that I could do a clean re-install, but I'm a bit more of a noob than I like to admit and can't find them to uninstall them. I'm running Windows XP.

Any possible help would be greatly appreciated!

    Ok

You should be able to roll your computer back to a previous configuration.
Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, click on System Restore.

Find a date before the hardware installation and click that.
Cross fingers and let the pc do it's job.
Start up again and see if the PC says "Restore completed successfully".

Which will mean your new drivers are now gone.

So go to the website of the mfg, and download the BASIC driver package, not the software bundle for the vid card.

    MAKE ANOTHER RESTORE POINT HERE

Get that ready to go and install with THAT driver package.
Add the hardware, tell the add hardware wizard where to look for the new drivers, and see how it goes.

One additional thing, after you've restored the first time, uninstall the drivers for your built-in card. Go in to control panel, device manager, select your NVidia card, uninstall, then continue on with what Cutenoob said.

Okay, what's my next move if freaking System Restore won't restore to an earlier date? I've tried about five different dates within the past three months and none of them work. It just tells me that they failed to restore. Guh.

In the BIOS, is there an option to disable on-board video?

I'm not sure how to find out. I don't even know what BIOS stands for. :P

              BIOS
              Basic input output system
A firmware, motherboard level of software that lets you configure RAM, CPU speeds.
Very basic, more like a IS this connected thing to look at. This is accessed by either F2 or F9 or F12 during startup.

Dont screw with it if you don't know.

OK. So you can't roll back?

Go back another month...any luck there?

If you cannot do a sys restore at all, you might want to try uninstalling the drivers/software, in safe mode.

Reboot machine. As soon as you see the black screen of IDE drive connected / Ram amount....HIT F8.
              HIT F8
              HIT F8
              keep hitting F8.

You will come to a screen (BEFORE YOU GET TO XP!!!) which is black. Has gray letters. Stuff about "Start in Safe mode" "Start in Safe mode with networking"
              yadda yadda.

Use Arrow keys to navigate to Start in Safe Mode
Let it boot (stuff will scroll on screen, don't freak)
              Get in to XP
Go to Control Panel (and yes stuff will look distorted and funky)
See if you can find the driver/software in Add Remove Programs

If not - get ready to reboot soon...

Go to C:\program files\ and look for folders named ATI.
Stop here, take a picture and post it for us.
POST A PIC HERE SO WE DON'T SCREW UP.

To take a picture - press the PrntScrn key (right side of keyboard) and save it as a .jpg in My Pictures.
Reboot PC, get here and post the pic so we can look at what you're yanking first.
Once we get a peek, we can tell you a bit more on what to pull.

You will need to be comfortable rebooting, getting into Safe Mode and taking pictures.

HUZZAH! One driver uninstall-reinstall (from the website, not the CD) and the glitching is gone, as is the stupid parental control thing.

Cutenoob, you are an absolute lifesaver. Thank you so much!

                  Glad to have helped.

                  Now make a restore point!
