  • PS3 to HDMI monitor question.

I noticed my new LCD monitor has a HDMI port, and my ps3 has one as well, also has the funky digital audio connector.I believe it is NOT the SPDIF one, It does not look like the old Ps/2 mouse/keyboard connector, its a aquare peg.

Anyway, the setup Id like to attempt, is to route my PS3 through my monitor, via the HDMI, and use the computers speakers for sound.

I have a HDMI cable that came with my monitor, but I dont have anything beyond the standard audio jack - Line In on the computer.

Ill have to play with the monitor to see if i can switch it from its DVI connection that links it to the computer, to the HDMI port , etcetc.

I happen to have an RCA to Audio port adapter from when i hooked my vcr to my tuner card, so IF i can make my computer reroute the sounds from Line in to Line out, that may do the trick.

My only question is, Can I get reasonably priced adapters that can remove my computer from the equation, or perhaps any software I may need to have access to to reroute sound?

The only adapters I have found so far, will convert the video, but I want to do this with what I already have, don't feel like spending a bunch of money for what will likely just be a test.

this is the monitor in question

I have an old Aver TV tuner card, and was able to get my PS2 to work through it, but there was static on the screen that I never could figure out how to fix, and only by routing through a VCR was I even able to reduce it. So id like to avoid using it if possible, I am just curious how some of my games will look in HD, and thought id try to find a way to do it this.

I think what would be real nice, is if there was a box i could plug my speakers and monitor into, that I could also plug my computer and ps3 into, and just switch back and forth, like the old boxes for having multiple monitors on pc.

Okay lets start off with the video. It might work (no promises) with the HDMi cable without much muss or fuss (though I can't see why they would have the HDMi connection in the first place. It's the same as a DV-I but also carries stereo sound) Usually they detect automatically and if not, you will need to check the manual for details. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. Best to get that operational first seeing that you have everything to test that.

Now for the sound. That "square peg" is a digital optical port, and uses fiber optic for the signal. The bad news is that I know of no adapter apart from a digital receiver that will convert that signal into something you can use with your speakers, and even then it usually results in the speakers being modified out from their original purpose. The good news (and I'm running from memory, so don't quote me on this) is that you can use the regular playstation connector that comes with the console for your sound. Just don't plug the video signals in and set the console for HDMi mode. You can use an RCA to mini-phono adapter to plug in your speakers, though you will only get stereo.

So, assuming I'm right, (and this is a VERY big assumption) then all you would need is something like this but test out your video first. If that doesn't work, then you save some money.

Of hand, whats the simplest way to redirect audio from L-In to L-Out?

      edit...

with a little google-fu, it would apepar windows can do it automattically. Hopefuly its as simple as it sounds via what i found. hehe

      thanks, btw.
