  • Let me guess - this isn't good?

I take it it's not good when a Maxtor USB drive beeps (3-4 beeps).

It's been happening a lot recently. I'm decrypting some of my files (damn work encryption) and I'm going to do a massive backup, I guess I'll need to head to BB tonight to get a new one - thank god 500GB are on sale for $110 now.

(This one is a Maxtor 60GB drive).

EDIT:: I missed the USB part.

Ok, specifically what I could find through a short couple minute google search was not very specific at all

In any case the two most common beep code patterns I could find for maxtor - and I couldn't find anything specifically about what a 3-4 pattern is - 1: bad power supply or 2: the drive has failed. If you have another power supply you could try that before replacing the drive outright, but from what little I have read it sounds like quite a few people in the past have had troubles with some of the older 60gb USB drives just out and out failing.

When in doubt.. backup and replace.

Its a 2.5" drive so no external power supply - chances are the drive is going.

The drive isn't young - years old but it's been my loyal companion in my laptop bag for this job plus a data storage for work stuff with my previous position.

That's exactly what I did. $140 (that I couldn't afford) later - 500GB Western Digital drive and a nice hard case.

I did a complete backup yesterday when I was buying the new drive and last night, and now, I'm transferring all of the data over to the new drive.

That would be that its not drawing enough power from the USB then. That makes it more likely that the drive is going bad if you have tried it in other USB slots and have had the same problem, especially on other computers.

If you have a splitter or a USB pass through on the slot that you are plugging it into try taking anything else plugged into the same USB slot out. Otherwise it is more certain that its the drive pooping out.

Uh oh. You have it backed up right? Good.

*Takes drive from draggar and pounds it to pieces with a sledgehammer.*

You were getting too attached to hit dragg, this is a reminder that nothing in the world is permanent.
