*sigh* I am posting entirely way too often in this section.

This is probably only going to confirm my worst suspicions, but what the hell. Last night I think I killed my Zune mp3 player (which was a nice unexpected Christmas gift from my folks; I haven't even had the damn thing for a year yet!) by accident.

I went to a corner of my room to unplug things like I always do before calling it a night. I was listening to the player at the same time. Also in this corner (but not near the wirings!) is my cats' waterbowl. Guess what happened?

Somehow I managed to trip over my own sorry-ass clumsy feet, and there went the Zune. I yanked it out right away and thought I could save it, as it was still going, but before I could wipe it off it went dead, and I haven't been able to bring it back since (it had a fully charged battery).

    I'm screwed, aren't I.

    TECHNOLOGY HATES ME.

You never know... open it up if you can, and whether you can open it or not, let it sit a few days before you try it again.

I once had a cell phone that the neighbor's dog ate and passed, which naturally was nasty afterwards. I washed it (had to!) as best I could. It worked fine after drying out, and though it was still too hopelessly nasty to carry around I was able to get my numbers out of it. For curiosity's sake I sealed it in a zipper bag and kept it someplace, and last time I came across it it still worked.

Just don't *expect* it to work.
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

I've dropped my cell phone and pager in the toilet a time or two before. All I've ever had to do was remove the battery and let it dry for a day or two. They always started working again after that.

most circuit boards are treated to be water resistant. It's only when the current going through the boards transfers to other parts because of the water that it kills it. let them dry and they're all good.

I don't think I -can- remove the battery. It doesn't look like there's any way TO take it out (i.e., the thing was built so as to have the battery be a permanent installation).

Just leave it off without doing anything that would cause it to try and activate then. The rice thing can work to draw out the moisture faster.

Other than that, just wait for several days. If you have a quiet place, give it a shake after 4-5 days and listen for water moving inside.

Oh, and hello to a fellow Zune user.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, 1) I don't possess nor can I get the repair kit necessary (no credit card; long story), and 2) I'm so technologically inept I'd probably screw the thing up royally (if it isn't already shot).

                  Minorly updatedness

It's now (very) early Thursday morning. I still can't get Zunie to work, and it took its swim Sunday night. So, when I do trash takeout later today, bye-bye Zune.

                    Aw.

TheSHAD0W's instructions for electronics dropped in stuff:

                    1. Yank the battery IMMEDIATELY.

                    2. If the item was dropped in anything other than perfectly pure water - and yes, the water in a fishbowl does not count as perfectly pure - rinse it out with tap water. Yeah, I know you're going but it's already gotten wet, and by rinsing it out you're preventing corrosion that may kill it weeks later.

                    3. Shake out as much water as possible. If you live in an area with low humidity and a hot climate, setting it out on your car's dashboard will work. Otherwise, with the back off and the battery removed, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in a toaster oven set at 150 degrees (Fahrenheit). (Do NOT try this with a device that has a battery installed in it!) Make sure the paper is wrapped so it can't contact the heating elements in the toaster oven!

Using this method I've saved one cell phone that was dropped in liquid not once but twice, and another that was dropped in a vat of baked beans.

Just out of curiosity, is there a risk of the paper igniting?

Paper spontaneously ignites at 458 Fahrenheit. So set to 150, there's little chance, so long as it stays clear of the heating element. Coincidentally, that's where the name of the Ray Bradbury book comes from. And 150C is well below 458F, so if that's what TheShad0w meant, you're still clear.

Edited post to make it clear I'd meant Fahrenheit. Thanks. :-)
