  • Networked All-in-One Refusing to Scan

Okay, I've already tried talking to both HP and Apple about this, with only temporary success. I'm not a tech expert my any means, but I'm not a noob, either. I've done all the standard "power down, power up, check connections, ensure all software/firmware is up to date, verify that there are no known incompatibilities between software/firmware versions, test it on a different computer" yada yada yada. Now I'm stumped and I'm hoping you guys can save me from an extremely frustrated hubby.

Problem: All-in-one printer stopped scanning from one of the laptops on my home network.

    Error Message:
Sorry, scanner could not be initialized. (Scanner not found)

Setup: Home wired and wireless network through a Belkin Wireless N+ router. Printer is an HP Officejet Pro L7580 connected to the router via ethernet cable. Two identical Mac PowerBook G4 laptops (1.67 GHz running OS 10.5.7) are connected wirelessly using the standard internal AirPort Extreme cards.

Errata: The printer can still print from the laptop it won't scan to. The printer can still be found by the HP Device Manager. *My* laptop (a perfect clone of my hubby's) can still scan and print, as can the eMachine that is connected the the router via ethernet cable.

This has happened once before (when we switched from connecting the printers to the printer with an ethernet every time we wanted to print or scan to going through the router), but the instructions from HP fixed it. HP's suggestions were to check all connections, check the network settings, disable the firewall, and then to uninstall the software by going to the Device Manger>Information and Settings>Uninstall HP AiO Software and holding down the Control + Option + Command keys. A fresh install downloaded from their website seemed to do the trick, and I set both laptops up under System Preferences>Print & Fax. Photoshop shows the proper link under the Import menu to open the HP Scanning software, but then the whole thing hangs trying to find the scanner.

I've tried all this again with my husband's machine, but it just isn't working. Any clues as to what's going on and what I can do to fix it? I'll be happy to look up any settings or version numbers you think you need to trouble shoot this one.

I had the exact same problem with my HP all in one. It will print but won't scan over the network. I finally gave up and connected it via USB to my desktop and now it will scan via USB. If you find a way to scan over the network let me know.

USB works, too, but we *really* don't want to have the cables laying around in the living room where we do our work.

If it would work wirelessly before, what's causing the hiccups?

Always start with the simplest things...

Have you replaced the cable from the AiO to the wireless?

Same driver version on both machines?

Have you tried initiating the scan at the printer? Also, make sure no internet security software is blocking your printer drivers from opening server connections.
