  • Reinstalling Windows with multiple SATA drives

    Has anyone seen this?

If I need to reinstall Windows or I swap the primary drive, the installer sets up the secondary as the C: drive and then makes the drive that is supposed to be the rpimary as the I: (or whatever drive).

Any eays way around this w/o unplugging the secnd drive?

Offhand, I would think the "secondary" drive is connected to a lower SATA port than the other. (i.e. primary drive to SATA 2, secondary to SATA 1) Or maybe it's picking the bigger or faster of the two. Hard to tell as I have never tried or had it come up.

Non-sata I would say it's probably some jumper issue on the drive.

SATA drives - the primary is on channel 1 and the secondary is on channel 4. It only happens when the primary is not formatted.

It's odd but I'm also getting errors like I used to before the previous wipe / install (wowexec errors, flash errors etc..) so it look like I may have to reload for a third time.

Strange -- although if the primary is not formatted, the OS (or the physical SATA card) might report the formatted first by default.

Hope it works out for you... not sure why you'd be getting the errors you have been though after reinstalling shy of installing something that causes the problem (some 3rd party thing).

Maybe just go simple on this one: Unplug all SATA drives except the one you want to install to.

I did one better - I just disabled it in the BIOS and then it saw the smaller drive as the primary. Then, when all was said and done, I re-enabled it in the BIOS.

It beats taking the PC out and opening it up.
