  • Certain type of mouse?

I went to the the Parent Support group that is held at my daughter's classroom last night.

The teacher was wondering if they made a mouse, or you could program a mouse, where if you click either the left or right buttons, it wouldn't matter.

The reason being: one student pushes the middle of the top part of the mouse, so half the time it works, half the time it doesn't and the student gets frustrated. (Also have to remember this student is autistic, but not I'm not sure how severe his autism is).

So, is there are way to program the mouse to accept the right click just like a left click? Or do they make a mouse to with just one huge button at the top?

If this is confusing, I'm sorry. I'm typing as I'm thinking and remembering and I have no coffee in my system.

Depends on the mouse and the driver software for said mouse. Some will let you go in and map specific functions to the mouse buttons, so you could set both buttons to the same functions. Looking at my default mouse driver at work, it doesn't seem to be available with the basic mouse driver that ships with XP.

Another solution might be to look for an old one-button mouse, but you'd likely have to find those on Ebay, or somesuch. You might have trouble finding one with the proper connections for modern PCs, though. Also, has the teacher tried trackballs? We had some good luck with one of those for a severly motor-skills handicapped user, as the buttons tend to be on the sides and larger than normal. A little tweaking of the sensativity settings, and she was off and rolling.

Many mice made for Macs have only one button, and all of them since 1998 or so are USB so the connection shouldn't be an issue.
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

        Hm.
Call an old pc repair shop and ask if they have the one button mices around.

Another thing to do would be create a textile reminder on the mouse LEFT button. like a felt O or some kind of glueable thing you could put on the left click button, at the magic spot of mouse.

That way, Kid would be able to position hand at mouse and feel where he needs to keep index finger and palm - would be able to use this anywhere, after a few weeks of correct mouse usage he might be able to go to a plain mouse and hold it the same way.

          Another thought:

if there are only 2button mice available, you may need to turn "off" right click.

Can be done via driver settings, or can be done for whole pc. I dont think it's possible for Specific applications.
Also depends if pc is on a domain or not.

If you go for an Apple mouse, I recommend the Pro Mouse. It's extremely simple while still being the right shape. It should be available second-hand.

Otherwise, try a Logitech and use the reprogramming software that comes with it.

Thank you everyone! I'll relay the information to the teacher.

She really feels sorry for the kid because he likes to play the computer, but it can frustrate him very much.

Had a quick poke at my Logitech software, the left and right mouse buttons are locked

Well, yeah, that's the Macintax ^_^ It would probably be a good one to try if you can pick, one up cheap, tho.

a quick google search yielded a nice solution made by chester creek.

its about 80% the size of my standard optical mouse and it too is optical and usb.
                      price is pretty affordable.
I saw it on a few major retailer websites too.
