  • KVM / Video isue

I have a KVM switch so I can connect some computers to a monitor at my house.

With one PC - I have the resolution set to 1280 X 1024 but whenever I switch away from it - when I go back to it the display resets to 1024 X 768 (much larger icons etc..).

I've booted up the PC, set the resolution, and then shut it down. I rebooted it again to make sure that the settings did stick and they did - they only revert when I switch away from it using the KVM.

    Suggestions on this?

    WinXP system.

2 of the 4 computers are not affected (one I don't use often and the other for my weather station). Oddly, my work laptop cannot be "woken up" if it is off the KVM for a while (no definite time - between 45 and 90 minutes and it's not sleep mode).

Only thing I can think of is your system's forgetting the settings because it thinks that you're unplugging the monitor, and then it sets to native settings (or what it thinks native settings are) when you go back. Any chance you can update the video drivers, or get ATI's Catalyst Control Centre, or NVidia's control panel? You should be able to set specific profiles based on what port is used rather than what's connected.

Its an on-board graphics card by Intel.

      I think it's called EagleLake

Edit: New drivers did it. Thank you!

Seconded. Glad the update fixed it though.

The one board part doesn't bother me that much - I don't use the PC for games (except Facebook games) so it's not big deal. The system also has 4GB of RAM and XP so it's got a lot of room to pull from without pulling from the system if needed.

Be that as it may, onboard is prone to more issues, and more likely to take the entire mobo with it if it fails. Even if I didn't need the power, I'd pick up a cheap graphics card to throw in it.

It has a (long) warranty and I"m certified with the manufacturer so they get parts out to me quickly.

Although maybe I will dig out an old card for this, not a bad idea. (I'll just need to remember to force over to that in the BIOS).

Funny - all of our desktops at work have on-board video and I rarely see mobos go (other than physically broken USB ports).

Pretty much any time I've seen the on-board go, it takes the entire mobo with it. So if you don't have any failures, then you'd not see it.
