  • Yep, something else has come up

I was away for the holidays, and my cat sitter was given permission to use my desktop. He sent me an email a few days ago with these ominous words:

    "Windows won't start."

Sure enough, it won't. A message came up saying that there's a problem (gee, you think?), and suggesting that I insert the Windows CD. I did. It didn't help. I clicked on "Repair".

The monitor has been showing the same thing for well over an hour:

"Your computer was unable to start

Startup Repair is checking your system for problems...

If problems are found, Startup Repair will fix them automatically. Your computer might restart several times during this process.

No changes will be made to your personal files or information. This might take several minutes."

Right, well, I've left it to run, and nothing's happening. Any ideas what might have happened (I have yet to talk to my cat sitter to see if he did anything), and what to do about it?

What to do? Smack your cat sitter around, because a) he did something, b) he won't admit it.

      Likely, but not necessarily.
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

Not necessarily, no. I've just spent God-only-knows how much time with this thing, and finally got it working again. It only took yet ANOTHER reinstallation of Vista to get the damned thing to work. I found out that C:\ntoskrnl.exe was corrupt, but I haven't the slightest idea how or why.

Okay. Vista is installed for, I think, the fourth time. Internet is working. Sound is working.

...Windows installed an update, and now I'm back to tiny little letters on various sites. I can barely see what I'm typing. Increasing the font size to 32 did a whole lot of nothing. Advice?

Websites? then you have to change the font size setting in your browser. If the site still won't change, then it's an issue with the site.

Alternatively, you can reduce the resolution as well, which will enlarge everything.

I've tried reducing the resolution, which causes big skinny type all over the screen. Just another service from your friendly neighborhood Windows producer.

I get that a lot on my flakey laptop running Win 7. It always happens after the laptop shuts down improperly. In my case, its because of an issue with the battery. So far though, haven't had any problems.

CTRL + or - to increase\decrease font size

CTRL mouse wheel for the desktop
