How do you retrieve a lost password?

I have windows xp home edition.

Since my computer has problems, I went to the recovery console to try to fix the problem, but I am asked for the administrator password, which I could not remember.

So I changed it through the control panel. But when I type in the new password at the recovery console, my comptuer does not recoginze it. How do I fix that problem?

Try running windows under Safe Mode. When you get to the log in screen, log in under the Admin account. Try changing the PW there.

On the XP computers Ive set up, there's the users you see in the control panel, and then there's an administrator (with the name "administrator" that doesn't appear in the control panel, but you can get to by right clicking My Computer > Manage > Users

Its possible your computer is set up the same way.

You could try downloading Hiren's boot CD, which has a password recovery/changing program on it. It's called "Active Password Changer".
