  • Password saver software?

Can any of our tech gods recommend a good password saver?

I really need to stop being so lazy with my passwords but I'm weary of changing them because I have been locked out of stuff before (including my my-space page which is still up 5 years later) so I tend to only stick to 3-4 pw's for everything and they are getting close to 4 years old now.

I know I could just keep a list on paper, but I was hoping for something that would help me generate alphanumeric passwords and store them for me.

    Any ideas?

Ta muchly to anyone who can help!

Well, for generating passwords, I use this site (or you can download the app to use directly).

As for saving your passwords, if you must; Notepad.

      Keepass portable from
      portableapps.com

makes and stores them and allows you to have the file password protected.
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.

Please don't hate me for saying this, but your stuff will really be more secure if you work out your own password regime. This may not work for you, but I use 3x5 index cards for each site I have to maintain. The cards go into a recipe box, and the box goes into the office fire safe.

If it's generating passwords that is creating problems, please be aware that many mechanical generators can create problems for you users. When I manually generate a password, I avoid "Ohs" and zeroes. I avoid "ells" and ones. The great thing about fives, eights, sevens etc is that they always look the same. A lower-case "e" looks just like itself, but a lower-case "o" could be mistaken for an upper-case, or even a zero! Although this does tempt me to evil, to give a password of "00OoO00Q00Ooo0Q" or one of "11l|1lI||ii1iilll01I".

I actually specifically use Verdana as my font of choice because every character you just used as examples looks enough unlike the others that it's easy to tell at a glance which is which, even if the others aren't present.

But in most fonts, many of those will have identical character maps, which annoys the hell out of me.

Some MMO griefers like to use those characters to make reporting them harder. Which is why most MMOs have made it possible to click on the name (in chat) or character (if present) and send a complaint about them directly.

I'll put in a second vote for KeePass. I keep my passwords with me on my flash drive (with a second one in a safe deposit box that I update every so often). One password to remember (and it's not an easy one) and everything else is secure.
