  • Possible firefox problem

Lately, whenever I open a new browser window in Firefox, it becomes unbelievably sluggish.

When I click on links, it takes a while for firefox to even recognize I clicked on something and start loading the page. Drop-down menus are also slow in appearing when I click on them.

The scroll wheel on my cordless mouse also doesn't work, but I can scroll pages up and down by dragging the scroll bar on the webpage.

After a few minutes, then it starts working faster again.

I haven't noticed these issues in IE. Restarting the computer doesn't seem to fix this.

I used to love Firefox, now I'm beginning to re-examine the relationship. Between its tendency to crash more frequently than I'd like, and now this, I'm thinking it may be time to find a new web browser.

I tried an uninstall and re-install of Firefox--that didn't help the problem. So I've exported all my favorites to IE and will be using that instead.

Anybody got any opinions on Google Chrome?

Don't know about Google Chrome. But I've got Firefox 3.6 installed currently and it seems to get sluggish when I've clicked on the icon in the Quick Launch bar, not to mention periods of hesitation when trying to pull down menus and such.

I recently took off my WeatherBug program b/c it was taking way too long for the Vista desktop to load completely. That helped with the startup, but not with FF.

I've heard good things about Opera, but I've not tried that in several months (had it on the old clunker desktop for a bit.)

Must've been one of my add-ons. Firefox started in "safe mode" and I had the option to disable all my add-ons, return to the default home page, and do other things. It seems to be working fine now.

Chrome is one of the browsers I use at work. It's pretty good. It used to have problems handling pages with a lot of java scripting, but now seems to handle it all fine. I don't know if I'd say it's better than Firefox, but it's not bad and definitely better than IE.

My FIL updated to Firefox 3.6 and he finds that sometimes it will hang during loading, and he has to go into task manager to kill the process so he can start it again.

Oh yes . . that "wonderful" Unresponsive Script message . . . I get those from time to time and they drive me batty.

Could be. I try to keep the number of add-ons I have installed to a minimum because I read somewhere that they can slow down FF. Perhaps try uninstalling some of them and see if that helps. Start with whatever you installed (or updated) last and try to work backwards.
