  • I'm so confused...

I have an e-mail account with Hotmail, and this is the second time that I have received an e-mail from myself. It's just a link, and I'm not sending it. Help, advice, anything?

odds are good that your address is being spoofed into the spam, making it look like you sent it to yourself. Not uncommon with webmail systems, and it preys on the possibility of people sending links to themselves so they don't have to remember site addresses when they travel. It's a derivative of those spam emails that are sent to look like replies with RE: in the subject line.

It's spam, nothing more. Mark it as such and move on. Unless you know that you sent it, remove it.

Yup, I get those all the time. Funny enough though, Gmail tosses them into my spam bucket.

As we speak, I have one from "Me" that says my World of Warcraft account is in danger of being closed because I sold it.

It's also sending them to people on my contact list.

I get emails from my niece's hotmail account. She hasn't used it in forever, so we figure someone's gotten hold of her account and is using it to send out spam.

This could be the same thing. Change your hotmail password.

Sounds like some spammer is using your account to send spam emails out.

Do a thorough virus scan of your computer, then change your email password, make it very different to your old one, I'd suggest minimum 8 characters with a combination of upper and lower case with at least some numbers or symbols.

make sure to do the virus check first just in case there is a key logger on your computer. It might also be worth changing any other accounts withthe same username/password combo.

I had it happen on my gmail account, messages suddenly started appearing in my sent folder with titles like "save 50% on new rolex watches" so I changed my password to a more secure one and kept an eye out. Not had any other problems in the past year

The emails being sent have nothing more than a link to some website, usually ending in a person's name, right? Like wwwbsaddresscom/beatrice.html

I've been getting emails like those from friends of mine that have hotmail accounts. They're sending to groups of 10 addresses at a time, all form the sender's address book.

I saved the html file and opened it in notepad. A lot of banner ads and scripting. It's probably an attempt to get you to infect your system and continue spreading it.

Dunno if it's a standard/typial worm or if it might be related to something like the stormbot.

As others have requested, change your password and run a virus scan. If you get emails like them from other people, let them know as well.

What the others said: Change your password.

And, since I despise Hotmail with a red-hot passion, I'd suggest "upgrading" to Gmail or something.
