  • Whats good to read PDF files? Save FLV?

I have win7 64-bit and would like to find a PDF reader. I will NOT use Adobe because on my old XP PC it would always auto open bad stuff in IE and install keyloggers or virii. So is there a "better" reader out there? Maybe free or real cheap? Or is there a way to stop IE from auto opening them if a page has one set to open when you visit the page?

Also I visit break and liveleak and sometimes would love to download and save the FLV video files. I know Real Player does this but on my XP system it would lockup IE and smetimes even Windows. Any suggestions on a cheap or even free way to save and later watch the files?

    Thanks for any help....

VLC videoplayer will play the files.
    Keepvid will download the files.

I second the vote for VLC - it'll play just about any video file.

For FLV capture, I've been using Moyea FLV Downloader for awhile now, with no problems.

I like the Foxit reader for PDFs:

I've been using Ghostview since forever for PDFs. One thing about that is that it tends to ignore security settings on PDFs, so even if the publisher made it non-printable you can still print it.

(I got burned on a computer at work that had Adobe 7.x installed... damn thing was wide open to drive-by virus installs. Wound up with Vertumondo from that. Supposedly the newer versions are (more) secure, but they also take up way more real estate on the disk than you'd expect for a program whose sole purpose is to display a PDF file on your screen. <mode="old_fart"> I remember the old Apple ][+ days, a whole disk was only 143K...</mode>)

Might want to consider a slightly older version of Foxit, too. I've heard the latest ones don't ask and just shovel a toolbar onto your system anyway. Dunno if it's true, not willing to try and find out.

I second (third... forth...) foxit. It's small and doesn't take up much space.
