Need a bit more info. how is grub not working?

Most common win 7 problem is using the ubuntu installer to resize windows partition on the hard-disk, win 7 dose not like this. Basic solution to this is to resize the windows partition in windows before installing ubuntu to the free space on the hard-disk we just created.

If its a different problem start with https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

In short, yes, grub should see Win7 fine.

In long, new GRUB2 fixes a lot of problems, and is a good deal simpler than previous versions. This is the default in the last 2 releases of Ubuntu. The script will read the magic number of the partition to see partition type, then based on that make a determination on OS. The script on my netbook has a section on win7, so it should, in theory, see it just fine.

If not, there's a quick module you can write to allow a win7 boot option manually.

Note: My netbook has an unused XP partition, and that's it for windows. I'm not a windows user at all, and can't make absolute determinations without the option of playing with it myself. That said, I _AM_ a Linux Systems Administrator for a major web hosting company here in Utah, and as such, am fairly well versed in the Linux side of things. :-)

The only advice I can offer, is that you want to partition your drive, and install Windows first, with Ubuntu second. That way, Grub will be set up to dual-boot between the two. If you install Ubuntu first, then Windows will override Grub and you won't be able to boot into Ubuntu.
