  • And the red flag goes WAY up.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I'm using WinXP Home with SP3 when I posted this...

Quick, dumb question: I opened up Task Manager for a second, sorted the list of processes alphabetically A-Z, and found a process that looked a little funny to me. It was listed as ' wowtask.exe' and listed halfway down the list.

Right now I'm thinking a run of SpyBot sounds like a good idea.

WOW stands for Windows On Windows and is pretty much omnipresent on a 64-bit version of Windows.

XP Home has never had a 64 bit variant (at least that was released to the general public... for all I know Microsoft might have one hidden away that no one knows about).

Perhaps do a search of the hard drive to find out which folder or program it came with.

FWIW, I'm willing to chip in on the "it's part of Windows" side. One of the omnipresent issues with the software I do tech support for at my job is random crashes caused when printing, specifically when using Windows 64-bit, regardless of flavor. The fix for it involves messing with virtual PDF printer entries, and one of the final steps explicitly states to kill WOW64.exe or something similar, and reboot. If using 32 bit, the file you saw may be its equivalent.

Yes, on 32-bit Windows it might be the 16-bit runtime.

That's right, Windows has only droped support for 16-bit Windows 3.x binaries with the 64-bit kernel, and that only because access to 16-bit mode was explicitly dropped from AMD64.

Well sort of. If you really need a Win16 program, there's nothing else that'll work, and you're on a Win64 platform, you can run DosBox and then run Windows 3.1 under that. (Obviously you need a valid Windows license to run it.)

The stupid thing is that I have a 32-bit Windows 3.1 program, which uses a 16-bit installer and therefore can't be installed in Win64. The sad thing that it's actually still worthwhile having that program, even though it's well over a decade old.

Another alternative is the "XP Mode" virtual machine --- only works on Win 7 Pro/Ent/Ult, but it's free AND it comes with a full license to XP Pro included (I suppose that is technically part of the higher cost of W7 P/E/U).
