  • IE and Yahoo Proxy settings

Asking in place for a friend and will try to give all the details needed. He says he cannot connect and that its not an incorrect username or password but the proxy settings and that either he hasn't tried uninstalling and reinstalling yahoo but that it keeps saying that the proxy settings for IE are wrong. so here is his e-mail quoted.
(I know little to nothing of proxy settings)

OK, all at once neither FF nor YM would connect, the troubleshooting log from YM
    says:

[VIP Raw] Connecting to Virtual IP server 127.0.0.1...
[VIP Raw] Resolving host name 127.0.0.1... [PASSED]

Now I went into FF and toggled on "auto detect proxy settings for this network"
and that did the trick, FF now connects. IE though won't connect, and I can't
figure that out either. Since YM gives me an error message saying that the
Internet options on IE are set wrong. I've messed around with them but no luck
    so far.
EDIT: yeah FF = Firefox doh

FF is most likely Firefox. As to proxy settings in Internet Explorer, if he opens Internet Options and goes to the connections tab, clicks on LAN settings he will be able to turn off Automatic detection of the proxy server or clear the proxy server that is set. Failing all of that, I would check for malware.

One suggestion on a Yahoo help forum (this seems to be a common enough issue) is to clear the browser cache for IE.

Other than that, I have nothing.

Um, unless I'm missing something, 127.0.0.1 is the universal testing loopback address. It shouldn't be assigned as an IP address. Or was this done to mask his IP information?

I have no idea. he did reply with this

Well, the darn thing started working again. I think ad-aware or avast
quarantined a virus or malware, not sure. For x-mas I'm either getting myself a
new computer, or getting this one fixed up. Not sure which, like I said, I have
higher priorities as long as this one is still clunking along.
so it was more than likely one of the above as the latest version(s) of yahoo go out and bring crap in and avast or zone alarm or which ever catches that crap. with zone alarm i get pop ups asking me do i want to allow yahoo updater (yahooAUS or yahooupdate) to be allowed i say no each time and so far no issues with it. but i'm sure there is a paragraph or two in the user agreement that allows this so i can't gripe about it to yahoo. like they care

                  thankies all for the help
                  UPDATE!:
apparently it was the viruses. i told him set your anti-virus program to scan daily as you are only online when you get home from working all day so yeah.
(he isn't comp illiterate but not up to date on the latest either, somewhere in between so yeah he didn't have his anti-virus on a few days every now and then so bam, that was the issue.

I told him he probably needs it serviced or depending on how old it is, look into getting a new one. (its kinda old almost 6 years now)
